Pixes drummer David Lovering describes this as a very "un-Pixies-like" song, calling it "gentle and dreamy." He said: "It's an easy song to play, but it's very effective in the way it grabs people. It's got a very odd, arresting spirit. There's nothing else that sounds quite like it." -- Watch a live version from Belgium in 1989: www.youtube.com --

'To Bring You My Love' was PJ Harvey's first proper solo album, recorded after the breakup of the PJ Harvey Trio. "'To Bring You My Love' feels theatrical, with each song representing a grand gesture. Relying heavily on religious metaphors and imagery borrowed from the blues..." www.allmusic.com

"This one started out as a piano ballad...And I'd tried maybe ten different versions. But somehow we took it to this one that felt like it was sort of based on 'And Your Bird Can Sing' by The Beatles — I was very obsessed with Revolver at the time. This track was written by Scottish band The Vaselines about the Scottish actress Molly Weir, who played Hazel The McWitch in late '70s/early '80s BBC children's show 'Rentaghost'. Nirvana included this on their 1992 compilation album Incesticide - full of covers, b-sides, other deep cuts and alternate takes.

New! Spunky! arrives following some major life changes for the Indonesian trio comprising Angeeta Sentana (vocals, guitar), Akbar Rumandung (bass, vocals) and Edo Alventa (guitar, vocals), including a switch in locale from Yogyakarta, the city where they formed the band while still in college. "This is Grrrl Gang’s first release after we graduated and got day jobs that made us have to move to Jakarta, which is undeniably 180 degrees compared to Yogya," says Rumandung. "But moving to Jakarta enabled us to work with Lafa on Spunky! from start to finish." tinyurl.com

Hybrid remix. Chilly edit. Lead singer Thom Yorke wrote this about how he felt after a show on their 1997 OK Computer tour. The show was in Birmingham, England, and when Yorke got off stage he went to the dressing room and felt completely burned out. The band was becoming famous, but Yorke was feeling helpless and victimized...The line, "Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon," refers to the face you make because of a lemon's taste. During the OK Computer tour, Yorke walked around with a sour face a lot. www.songfacts.com

CIEL met on the South Coast of England where they distilled their differing influences into grunge-pop finery. Early on the band caught the eye of BBC 6’s Steve Lamacq who included them as a spotlight artist on his show. They gained further radio plays across the UK and US (BBC 6 Music, KEXP, WFUV) as well as loyal support from online publications like CLASH Magazine, Under The Radar and Earmilk. cielcielciel.bandcamp.com

This song was written by Elastica lead singer Justine Frischmann, who was formerly a guitarist in the UK band Suede and dated their lead singer, Brett Anderson. She hasn't discussed the meaning of this song, and the mere mention of it is hostile territory as she has been asked so often about copping the Wire track. The song has a theme of giving something up ("Who wants a life anyway?") in order to form a connection. This can be an interpersonal relationship, or possible a professional one, making sacrifices in terms of music. www.songfacts.com

Damon Albarn's original version was a third slower – it was guitarist Graham Cozon who sped the tune up. Said Albarn in Isle of Noises by Daniel Rachel: "It's definitely better the way it ended up. As soon as I hear myself doing anything I've done before I just do something else. I go the other way or I just go below or above. I can't bear repeating myself. As soon as I've finished something I think, 'That's terrible. Right, I better start again." www.songfacts.com

In the US, this was the #1 song of 1984. It topped the charts for five weeks over the summer, and kept Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark" at #2, preventing The Boss from ever having a #1 hit. Springsteen was a huge fan of Prince. "Whenever I would catch one of his shows, I would always leave humbled," he said in dedicating his April 23, 2016 concert to the recently deceased superstar. www.songfacts.com

Empire of the Sun released the video for “Alive,” a three-and-a-half-minute clip which finds the Australian electro-pop act in an all-out fantasy-mode. In “Alive,” the pair of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore embark on a sci-fi romp through various stunning locations, from dramatic desert landscapes, beneath towering trees and on the edge of the ocean. The outfits are over-the-top, and not all the characters in the video are positively human. www.billboard.com

There are bits of classical music flowing through this song. Rachmaninoff's "Prelude C-sharp Minor," sampled from a recording by Les Baxter played on a synthesizer, is blended into the verses. The piece of classical music at the beginning of the song is "Night on Bald Mountain" by Modest Mussorgsky. This part is edited out of the radio version. Also sampled is "Love is Blue" by The Jazz Crusaders. www.songfacts.com
