New music from a band who borrows its name from Brian Eno's song "The True Wheel." Guitarist Martin Moscrop shared that the album title is "called 1982, but I wouldn’t say this album sounds anything like Sextet," referring to their third album that was released that year. Drummer Donald Jonson added, "The title is just playful. People can take it whichever way they can." Among the first white indie groups to draw heavy influence from funk as well as disco and Latin percussion, A Certain Ratio, who formed in 1978 in Manchester, were among the first to debut on Tony Wilson's Factory Records in 1979 with "All Night Party," produced by Martin Hannett.

1999 is the fifth studio album by Prince, released on October 27, 1982, by Warner Bros. Records. It became his first album to be recorded with his band the Revolution. bit.ly Basic tracking for D.M.S.R. took place at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California on 20 April 1982, during the same set of sessions which produced Free, Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), Delirious, Automatic and How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore. When CD technology was created and albums were released on CD, D.M.S.R. was left off the initial releases of 1999 as the time limit on CDs was 74 minutes at the time. As CD capacities increased, however, the track was added to the tracklist again. bit.ly

ĠENN is a Maltese/UK ensemble, and this song features backing vocals from John Newton of JOHN. Lead vocalist Leona Farrugia explains, "Naturally I’ve always felt like there’s a pressure to compare myself, be that through the lens of present technologies or within the creative industry. It’s something that can be very debilitating, especially to young people in a patriarchal society." bit.ly

Jack White said that the song is about a child trying to find his place in a dysfunctional family when a new baby comes. The cover of the single is an allusion to the graphics of Saul Bass, seen in the movie posters and title sequences of films such as Anatomy of a Murder and The Man with the Golden Arm. The cover also alludes to Jack White's then-broken index finger and his obsession with the number three. bit.ly

"Making Time" is The Creation's debut single released in 1966 and was featured in Wes Anderson's 2nd film, "Rushmore." The Creation were a dynamic band with an equally engaging image, they would burn brightly for less than two years, yet would leave an indelible mark upon music history. Over the nearly five decades since, the Creation has seen a tremendous resurgence in interest. First it was the Jam flossing "Making Time" on the inner sleeve of All Mod Cons. A few years later Alan McGee formed the band Biff Bang Pow and his Creation record label. By the turn of the century a new generation had discovered the band via a strategic placement in Wes Anderson’s Rushmore. bit.ly

"There’s a deliberate, claustrophobic repetition to the earlier stages of the song/video, which mirrors the very human tendency to obsess in cycles of thought — it’s certainly something we both struggle with as individuals," says JOHN drummer and vocalist John Newton. "If you take the title more literally, we all contain a patchwork of images sewn together from the past, and these memories are used as a map of survival within our present. These primal instincts seem overloaded nowadays, and we become open to be haunted by even the slightest reflection." Catch JOHN live at the Sunset Tavern on Oct. 10! And it’s very much about that experience of being able to open those doors to a club, and the beautiful people are everywhere. This is the first New Order song to be included on a studio album, Low-Life, at the same time as its release as a single. The vinyl version has Factory catalogue number FAC 123 and the video has the opposite number, FAC 321. The overall meaning of the song is unclear to its writer today. In an interview with GQ magazine Bernard Sumner said, "I haven't a clue what this is about." He agreed with the interviewer that his best known lyric is in the song: "Pretending not to see his gun / I said, 'Let's go out and have some fun'". The lyrics, he revealed, came about after the band was visiting a man's house in the United States who showed his guns under his bed before they went out for an enjoyable night. It had been quickly written, recorded and mixed without sleep before the band went on tour in Australia. bit.ly

"With A Hammer" was composed across a two-year period in New York, Seoul, and London, begun shortly after the release of "What We Drew" and during the lockdowns of the Coronavirus pandemic. It is a diaristic ode to self-exploration; the feeling of confronting one’s own emotions, and the transformation that is possible when we’re brave enough to do so. In this case, Yaeji examines her relationship to anger. It is a departure from her previous work, blending elements of trip-hop and rock with her familiar house-influenced style, and dealing with darker, more self-reflective lyrical themes, both in English and Korean. Yaeji also utilizes live instrumentation for the first time on this album—weaving in a patchwork ensemble of live musicians, and incorporating her own guitar playing. "With A Hammer" features electronic producers and close collaborators K Wata and Enayet, and guest vocals from London’s Loraine James and Baltimore’s Nourished by Time. bit.ly

Avalon Emerson, former software developer turned Berghain DJ and acclaimed techno producer, gives off the enviable aura of someone who’s good at everything. When she describes her musical database management in precise schematic detail, or excitedly reveals how much she’s learned about the septic system at her rural pandemic retreat, you can practically see the mental flowcharts unfurl. She’s admitted that she’s “not really a singer,” but for Emerson that’s just another in-game challenge to unlock. Her debut album is a self-described pop record credited to her new collaborative project Avalon Emerson & the Charm, and she sings almost the whole time. Pandemic restrictions enforced a pre-planned break from touring and, perhaps, opened more time for home listening. “My idea of a perfect record is a Cocteau Twins record, things that are soft and beautiful,” she told Pitchfork. bit.ly

Jessy Lanza starts her 2023 with the first single she's written and produced since moving to LA from Hamilton, Ontario via New York and San Francisco; the start of a new chapter for her, with the upbeat, rolling "Don't Leave Me Now." As is often the case with Jessy's lyrics, they disassociate from the confident energy of the music, as they were written in response to almost being hit by a car when she first arrived in LA. This triggered an event of the Agoraphobia she's felt since she was small and so she wrote 'Don't Leave Me Now' an act of Catharsis. bit.ly

In the years leading up to Dan Snaith’s seventh album as Caribou, the Canada-born musician had some dramatic experiences. First, his second daughter’s arrival in the back of a car on a busy London street, and secondly, the unexpected death of a close relative. Yet there’s nothing maudlin about Suddenly. It’s a typically kaleidoscopic burst of the colour from Caribou, and is warmly enveloping throughout. What Suddenly does so majestically is conjure a sense of the familiar, with Snaith’s soothing vocals wafting over each of its 12 intricately crafted electronic tracks, while surprising the listener at every turn. As beautiful as it is exciting, Suddenly is an uplifting album that embraces the change and shifting perspectives that life throws our way. bit.ly

The Minneapolis artist reveals, "This song is about a very specific memory with my cousin. I was terrified of breaking rules as a kid, so this experience of swiping her stepdad’s car, without a license, to go rent a movie has sunk itself into the core memory archives. "It also captures the entire relationship with my cousin and crashing through childhood and adolescence together. I have a really intense sensory memory, so the end of the track is a tangent of every time I’ve felt a specific breeze while with her. I also wanted to highlight and display all of these little instances of growing up that you don’t realize are going to stick with you." bit.ly

Tramhaus are a post punk band based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. "Make It Happen," a live favorite among locals, shows a more hollowed out, atmospheric side to the band, implementing the likewise hollow city marketing slogan in a more acid-spewing, cynical (and nonetheless very Rotterdam-sounding) context. When discussing the city’s punk scene, Rotterdam has been plagued with many of the same clichés as fellow port city Manchester: a supposed angular, grey-hued working class city. Arriving here, that couldn’t be further from the truth, because Rotterdam has been subjected as much of the same maladies as other Metropolitan areas: it’s original dwellers forced to make way to so-called progress, with a ballooning housing market only benefitting the rich and privileged. The bright-colored video for "Make It Happen" shines a light on the community living in Rotterdam’s Wielewaal district, who are set to be evicted from their beloved homes for the quote unquote future. "Drawing further on what we believe is a misleading Rotterdam city slogan – 'make it happen' – we came up with the idea to make a video with the Wielewalers," Tramhaus comment. "With the video, we hope to show their struggle to a wider audience." bit.ly

The newest single, “Roller,” from the Seattle-based funk collective, Polyrhythmics, is more like a daring film score than a debut track. Lead guitarist Ben Bloom zips a Ferrari down a narrow mountain road. Deep pocket bassist Jason Gray laughs as the guards take someone away during a poker game. The band’s horn section portends adventure in the 24-hour City of Sin. Drummer Grant Schroff jumps from building to building. It’s the sound of a Hollywood fairytale. It’s a tuxedo and a red rose. Parks shares, "'Pegasus' is about experiencing the warmth and lightness of good love for the first time. It also explores how the absence of chaos and the presence of real connection can be a little bit terrifying after a long time of not having it." As for the album, she writes, "The world/our view of it is peppered by the biggest things we experience—our traumas, upbringing, vulnerabilities almost like visual snow. This record is life through my lens, through my body—the mid 20s anxiety, the substance abuse of friends around me, the viscera of being in love for the first time, navigating PTSD and grief and self sabotage and joy, moving through worlds with wonder and sensitivity—what it’s like to be trapped in this particular body. "There is a quote from a Joanna Hogg film called The Souvenir, it’s an A24 semi-autobiographical film with Tilda Swinton—it recounts a young film student falling in love with an older, charismatic man then being drawn into his addiction—in an early scene he’s explaining why people watch films—‘we don’t want to see life as it is played out we want to see life as it is experienced in this soft machine.'
