'Big Time' is an album about the expansive power of new love, but this brightness and optimism is tempered by a profound and layered sense of loss. During Olsen’s process of coming to terms with her queerness and confronting the traumas that had been keeping her from fully accepting herself, she felt it was time to come out to her parents, a hurdle she’d been avoiding for some time. “Finally, at the ripe age of 34, I was free to be me,” she said. Three days later, her father died and shortly after her mother passed away. The shards of this grief—the shortening of her chance to finally be seen more fully by her parents—are scattered throughout the album. angelolsen.bandcamp.com angelolsen.com

Karen O says "Back when I was 19 living in the East Village...a roommate dragged me out of the apartment for an impromptu drink across the street, I left a votive candle burning on a plastic yaffa block which in my absence set flame to my room. Within an hour and a half ... firefighters had come and gone extinguishing the fire, I came home to find that a natural disaster had occurred (to my room) and most of my stuff, lost in the flames...but oddly enough the items that held the most sentimental value remained intact like sketchbooks, a favorite sweater with hearts across the chest, and photographs. I had photos of my parents in their youth where the fire burnt around the two of them as if there was some intangible force field protecting them, many photos like that, mysteriously leaving the beloved subjects untouched."

Elizabeth M. Drummond is a founding member of Australian band Little May. This is the first release from her solo project due out sometime in 2022. "I wrote 'Crisis' when I had moved cities after leaving Little May and a long relationship. I felt like everything I ever identified with had just exploded in front of me. I also realized I had been living on auto-pilot for as long as I could remember, and that I had been ignoring what I actually wanted for my life." "At this point, I had started to feel a huge amount of relief and humor in surrendering to the idea that things couldn’t get any worse. In many ways I felt like I had become 'no one,' and this started to become liberating. This song marks that time and those feelings for me." bit.ly

The Haunted Youth is the band centred around 28-year-old Joachim Liebens from Hasselt, Belgium, allowing him to channel his innermost feelings into music and lyrics. Liebens writes songs to dream away to, wrapping them in a rich and velvety sound, echoing the beguiling shoegaze of Slowdive, the lulling dream pop of Beach House, and the downtempo indie rock of Current Joys. The Haunted Youth rose to fame in 2021 with debut single "Teen Rebel," a success even surpassed by follow-ups "Coming Home," "Gone" and "Shadows." The band attracted attention in the rest of Europe and the US, earning praise from outlets including NME, KEXP, and Consequence of Sound. bit.ly thehauntedyouthofficial.bandcamp.com

This past week, KEXP's Dusty Henry looks at Jeff Buckley's 1994 masterpiece 'Grace' and how "Lover, You Should've Come Over" might be his greatest artistic achievement. www.kexp.org *** A Jeff Buckley documentary is officially happening, with the blessing of the Buckley estate. 'Rage Against the Machine‘s 1992 debut is a grenade that keeps exploding; among Nineties albums, only Nevermind and The Chronic rival it for cultural impact. Rage made hip-hop-tinged funk metal the new rebel music, taking over the alienation beat from grunge slackers and making Marxist sloganeering seem badass.' -- read more of the retrospective at Rolling Stone: tinyurl.com "America touts itself as the land of the free, but the number one freedom that you and I have is the freedom to enter into a subservient role in the workplace. Once you exercise this freedom you've lost all control over what you do, what is produced, and how it is produced. And in the end, the product doesn't belong to you. The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve." ~ Tom Morello, guitarist

On this day in 1974, Punk Rock pioneers The Ramones play their first show in a local New York club named CBGBs, opening for a band called Angel and the Snake. (Which would soon have a name change and begin going under the moniker they’re still known by today: Blondie.) The Ramones made their CBGB debut on August 16, 1974. Legs McNeil, who cofounded Punk magazine the following year, later described the impact of that performance: "They were all wearing these black leather jackets. And they counted off this song ... and it was just this wall of noise ... They looked so striking. These guys were not hippies. This was something completely new." Setlist: “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue” “I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement” “Judy Is a Punk”

1994 indie rock classic -- kexp.org My husband and I were set up on a blind date in March of 1994. We hit it off and spent much of that year running around sunny southern CA with very little money but an abundance of enthusiasm. At some point, we went to see Pavement in San Diego (maybe at the Casbah?) and - in a sign of our compatibility- each managed to forget our glasses. So, to see the band, we wended our way to the absolute front of the crowd, and had our ears blown by Crooked Rain Crooked Rain. If you could fit Gold Soundz or Range Life into the show, you’d bring back happy deafening memories. And thanks for consistently making my days with your shows. KEXP is my soundtrack. Thanks! Kristin

Patsy Cline recorded "Crazy" on this day in 1961. Patsy’s big hit song “Crazy” was written by future country legend, Willie Nelson. Nelson wrote the song while living in Houston, working for Pappy Daily's label D Records. He was also a radio DJ and performed in clubs. Nelson then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, working as a writer for Pamper Music. Through Hank Cochran, the song reached Patsy Cline. Cline was thrown through a windshield in a car accident two months before she recorded this (they didn't have seat belts back then). At the first session, she couldn't hit the high notes because of a broken rib, so the studio musicians recorded their parts without her. Two weeks later, she did her vocals while standing on crutches. In 1997, “Crazy” was named the number one jukebox hit of all time.

From the London based 8-piece band's long-awaited, debut album Could We Be More. Band members Sheila Maurice-Grey shares of the new album, "I think home has hugely informed the way we write and play our music. Everyone comes from different backgrounds but the thing that unites us in Kokoroko is that we all have a similar love and appreciation for afrobeat and highlife, whether that’s Ebo Taylor or Pat Thomas." "It’s that feeling when you’re younger and you hear something and you feel some ownership over it. For me, Nigerian music and soul was played in the house a lot so I felt I had ownership over it so when I heard it elsewhere, there was a certain pride and energy filled with it. Recreating a piece of music that fills you with pride, 'this is a piece of me and this is what I came from,'" Onome Edgeworth adds. bit.ly www.kokorokomusic.co.uk
