Hot Chip's eight album, "Freakout/Release," due out in August, is their first album in three years. The album features contributions from Cadence Weapon, Soulwax, and Lou Hayter. “We were living through a period where it was very easy to feel like people were losing control of their lives in different ways,” Joe Goddard said. “There’s a darkness that runs through a lot of those tracks.” Hot Chip was officially started by vocalists Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard in 2000, but the duo had actually been making music together since 1991.

The lyrics for this song were inspired by a crush Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp had on Altered Images singer and Gregory's Girl star Clare Grogan: "I was infatuated with Clare Grogan," he told The Guardian. "I met her on Top of the Pops and, at one point, travelled up to Scotland to have tea with her and her mum and dad." According to Gary Kemp, the feelings were unrequited and their relationship was platonic, however, it was enough to inspiration to write this song.

Writing credit is given to Attrell Cordes (Prince Be of P.M. Dawn) and Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, as the song is built around samples of their 1983 hit "True," as well as samples from The Soul Searchers' "Ashley's Roachclip." The main drumbeat also samples from Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full". Spandau Ballet lead singer Tony Hadley made a cameo in the video to this song, appearing near the end of the video. youtu.be

Kevin Morby is playing at The Showbox on Friday, November 11! bit.ly 'This Is a Photograph', was mostly written in Memphis, when Morby settled into the town for a period to aid his ailing father. He spent his days reflecting on the Mississippi riverside and thinking about some of the often troubled geniuses whose lives were marked by the city in some way. “Rock Bottom” is a song written from the perspective of those misunderstood souls, who created a lasting body of work even though they were chided for being different.

2017! Alec O'Hanley's explanation on the band's fixation on water: "“I guess it’s the duality of beauty and danger at the same time. That was the juxtaposition when we were growing up [in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia]. We were beach bums. Molly would jump off the pier for swimming lessons, but we were always taught to fear the rip-tide and the undertow, and that sort of thing. When you’re a teenager, that’s where you go, to goof off with your friends and sneak off late at night. It’s inherently very romantic." bit.ly Alvvays joined Kevin Cole Live in the KEXP Studio back in 2017: youtu.be

"The song is an inner monologue about keeping up appearances," Faroe Island artist Brimheim explains. "Attempts at adjusting very mundane things in life to feel in control. The collection of specific actions in the song – like buying frozen beans, sorting laundry, and skipping lunch – are all somewhat failed approximations of normalcy and balance. "In reality, they just thinly veil existential loneliness and insecurity. It’s someone trying to convince themselves and everyone around them that they’re fine, when they are actually barely keeping it together. It’s like they’re live action role playing as a responsible adult. The lyrics list all these things to point out their banal absurdity as well as their relatability." bit.ly

He has since signed the band to Loosegroove Records, a label he owns with Regan Hagar Cardiff, Wales-based James and the Cold Gun's James Biss revealed, "We wrote these songs for False Start in our flat in 2020 during the pandemic and our first time playing them live as a band was to record them. It was pretty mad recording live around our drummer, hearing the songs played loud with real drums for the first time after months of being stuck inside writing them on the computer. Recording with Adrian Bushby was a dream though, he was bopping around the control room and egging us on to play louder and harder, he’s technically the first person we ever played in front of."

New from Working Men's Club! Syd Minsky-Sargeant discussed its creation and themes in a statement, saying, "The first album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, this is a blur between personal and a third-person perspective of what was going on.
