*CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF 1991 TODAY! Curve formed in London in 1990 and split in 2005. The band consisted of Toni Halliday (vocals, occasionally guitar) and Dean Garcia (bass, guitar, drums, programming). Halliday also wrote the lyrics of their songs and they both contributed to songwriting. An important collaborator was producer Alan Moulder, who helped them to shape their blend of heavy beats and densely layered guitar tracks set against Halliday's vocals. Garcia, half Hawaiian and half Irish, had played in some small bands when he auditioned for Eurythmics. The English-born Halliday met Dave Stewart of Eurythmics after he had read a rock magazine interview with her in which she praised his pre-Eurythmics band, The Tourists. Halliday and Garcia were introduced to each other by Stewart. Garcia had played bass guitar as part of Eurythmics' live band in 1983–84 and on two of their studio albums, while Halliday was signed to Stewart's Anxious Records label as a solo artist. The pair formed an ill-fated group named State of Play in the mid-1980s before parting ways, embarking on a no less ill-fated solo career (Halliday) and further stints as a backing musician (Garcia), and then reuniting for a more long-term partnership in Curve. bit.ly

*CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF 1991 TODAY! R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe said he rarely wrote from personal experience, so that's not really him in the corner. "“That's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight’ was really about someone who's so shy, so intractably shy, a wallflower who's kind of forced forward into trying to express this feeling of love for someone, and failing miserably probably.” - on.today.com

*CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF 1991 TODAY! "Motownphilly" is Boyz II Men's 1991 debut single for their debut album Cooleyhighharmony. The single was a success, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Michael Bivins (Bel Biv Devoe) who co-wrote the song, provides a guest rap during the bridge. The video for the song was filmed in various locations in Philadelphia, the group's home city in December 1990. Two new jack swing groups, Another Bad Creation and Bell Biv DeVoe (of which Bivins was a member), are mentioned in the first verse: "Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD, the East Coast Family." Both groups appear briefly in the video, as does Sudden Impact, a short-lived, all-white R&B group organized by Bivins. The song title etymology involves a combination of two of the group's main musical influences: 1960s Motown and 1970s Philly soul.

*CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF 1991 TODAY! The song that changed everything and the opening track and lead single from the band's second album, 1991's "Nevermind." When Cobain first presented the song to his bandmates, it comprised just the main riff and the chorus vocal melody, which bassist Krist Novoselic dismissed at the time as "ridiculous." In response, Cobain made the band play the riff for "an hour and a half." In a 2001 interview, Novoselic recalled that after playing the riff repeatedly, he thought, "'Wait a minute. Why don't we just kind of slow this down a bit?' So I started playing the verse part. And Dave [started] playing a drum beat." As a result, it is the only song on Nevermind to credit all three band members as authors. wfcsradio.com

*CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF 1991 TODAY! This album was released through A&M Records on October 8, 1991. Soundgarden began the recording sessions for the album with new bassist Ben Shepherd in the spring of 1991. The album maintained the band's heavy metal sound while featuring an increased focus on songwriting as compared with the band's previous releases. AllMusic considered the album's music to be "surprisingly cerebral and arty"; alternative tunings and odd time signatures were present on several of the album's songs, and lyrics were intended to be ambiguous and create imagery. Of this track, Chris Cornell revealed, ""I don't know how everyone else feels... but I definitely go through periods of extreme self-confidence, feeling like I can do anything. Perhaps a fan will sense that, like in a performance, and the hero image creeps out. But then someone will say something, however insignificant, or I'll get something in my head and, all of a sudden, I'm plummeting in the opposite direction, I'm a piece of shit, and I really can't do anything about it. That's where 'Outshined' comes from, and why I'll never consider myself a hero." Check out this fantastic interview with guitarist Kim Thayil in 2016, 25 years after the album's release: bit.ly
