We're going to be paranoid until we hit our goals to keep KEXP vibrant and on the air -- help settle us down with your gift -- kexp.org Bassist Geezer Butler said, "The song 'Paranoid' was written as an afterthought. "With their unlikely but fascinating mix of arty concepts and raw sounds, the White Stripes were among the leaders of the early-2000s garage rock revival and helped define the sound of 21st century rock as the decade progressed. Jack and Meg White's clever use of limitations -- from their lineup to their instrumentation to their red, white, and black color scheme -- maximized their creativity, allowing them to bring a surprising number of facets to their seemingly back-to-basics approach." www.allmusic.com

KEXP wants you to know that You Are Not Alone In an interview with Pitchfork, Robyn talked about the main lyrical theme of the album: "The whole album is about being really lonely, but I think it's interesting to put that idea in a club where a lot of people are crammed into a small room." She particularly wrote "Dancing on My Own" with that in mind, and continued, "I've been touring so much the last three years and spent a lot of time in clubs just watching people, and it became impossible to not use that lyric—'dancing on my own'—because it's such a beautiful picture." bit.ly

The inspiration for the song occurred during a tour of Japan mid-1979, when lead singer Billy Idol and bassist Tony James were struck by the sight of the young crowd in a Tokyo disco club dancing with their own reflections in walled mirrors rather than with one another. bit.ly --- www.kexp.org

Hey Ladies, where y'all going? To donate to KEXP! Yeah! www.kexp.org "The vocal sample is from this YouTube video of these girls walking down a hotel hallway to the pool and their instructor is leading them in this chant, it’s like a 10 second clip. I was like, oh, my God — that's the catchiest hook I've ever heard. I need to put a beat to this, and I had this old funk sample I've always wanted to use, but it just didn't feel finished without vocals. I felt like it just needed something over the top of it. So, I immediately had that come to mind, put it together and I was just like, oh my God, this is like meant to be. The universe had created these two songs to come together. It's like musical tinder." Read more of John Richards' interview with Rudy Willingham from 2019: kexp.org

IDLES’ album concerns the tragedies of illness and loss, the addict’s vacillation between sobriety and vice, and the discomfort of rational people at the current state of the world. Joe Talbot, the band’s sardonic, growling singer, lost his disabled mother, cleaned up his substance abuse, and watched the xenophobic Brexit go down—all while his Bristol-based post-punk quintet blew up in his home country. While they mined grief and addiction on their heralded 2017 debut, Brutalism, its follow-up seeks to further focus their notorious, explosive, tongue-in-cheek energy. Now the name of the game is to see past the pain: Joy as an Act of Resistance pitchfork.com

Three days after Innervisions was released, Wonder was asleep in the passenger seat of a car after a show in South Carolina, and was seriously injured in a car crash. He spent four days in a coma. Tour director Ira Tucker recalls, "I remember when I got to the hospital in Winston-Salem. Man, I couldn't even recognize him. His head was swollen up about five times normal size. And nobody could get through to him. I knew that he likes to listen to music really loud and I thought maybe if I shouted in his ear it might reach him. The doctor told me to go ahead and try, it couldn't hurt him. The first time I didn't get any response, but the next day I went back and I got right down in his ear and sang 'Higher Ground'. His hand was resting on my arm and after a while his fingers started going in time with the song. I said 'Yeah, yeah!!! This dude is going to make it!'" bit.ly
