Barcelona post-punk band Mourn — once a quartet, now a trio — have returned with “Call You Back,” a serrated, infectiously melodic new single. “Parts of the song talk about the anxiety of phone calls and the emotions around them,” Mourn’s Carla Pérez Vas tells Billboard. “It’s pretty ironic that now we are looking at the phone all day, and everyone is anxious. If I’m not connected, I feel like I should be talking to my friends or family.”

Released on this day in 1996, by Jive Records, Beats, Rhymes and Life followed three years after the highly regarded and successful Midnight Marauders. Produced by The Ummah, the album is a departure from the joyful, positive vibe of the group's earlier albums and is regarded as their darkest album in content.
The themes of the song's lyrics revolve around roller skating and the joy of weekends, compared to darker themes explored throughout De La Soul Is Dead to try to debunk their "daisy-age" image caused by the themes of their previous album 3 Feet High and Rising.
Q-Tip from Tribe is on this track, and the song samples Chic's Good Times, as do the rest of the songs in this set!

"Cloudbusting" is about the very close relationship between psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the mature Peter. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved using a machine designed and built by Reich - a machine called a cloudbuster - to point at the sky. The song was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 memoir, 'A Book of Dreams'.

On “Dizzy Strange Summer”, Genevieve Artadi offers a window into her ad-lib creativity and the LA community where it’s been nurtured. This is the vocalist, composer and producer’s second solo album, and it sees her stake out her own ground outside of her other groups KNOWER, Expensive Magnets and Everything’s Under Control. She brings her own slant to the DIY LA scene that she’s grown up in, melding influences from jazz, psychedelia, bossa nova and avant-garde electronics. “Dizzy Strange Summer” marks not only Artadi’s debut on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint, but her first self-produced project released on any record label.
Ought's new is called Sun Coming Down, and “Beautiful Blue Sky” is its first single. Lyrically, it’s a song centered around a series of observations — light clinging to someone’s shoulders, a high-rise condo, a big, beautiful, blue sky — but it’s also a multi-layered critique of development and unending consumerism.

On "Do Wrong," Dixon Jr. chastises his lover for smelling like another man minutes before a gospel breakdown, clearly inspired by Al Green's eternal mix of the sacred and profane. The song borrows multiple elements from Green. There's the sample itself, from Green's "Love And Happiness." Then there's the low-slung groove, heavily influenced by the original. But the connection is deeper than a sample. On "Do Wrong," the exasperated lover Dixon Jr. portrayed on "I'll Provide" seeks solace in church. "You got me back in church / I'm still in love with you / I guess the devil's at work," he sings, before inverting The Jones Girls' legendary kiss off: "You better find a way to love me / 'cause if you don't somebody else will."

Tei Shi told Stereogum, “Die 4 Ur Love” is a song about the end of the world as you know it. About losing someone or something you never knew you could lose, and then all of a sudden, your reality shifts. All the things you would have done, or said, the love you could have given, and being willing to die over it. I wrote it right after the new year when I was feeling a sense of impending doom and darkness, which now feels surreal to see taking form in a real way around the world and in how the rest of 2020 has unfolded.”
In the New York Times October 30, 2007, Annie Lennox recalled that this was written by the duo just after they'd had a bitter fight. "I thought it was the end of the road and that was that," she said. "We were trying to write, and I was miserable. And he just went, well, 'I'll do this anyway.'" Dave Stewart came up with a beat, Annie Lennox improvised the synthesizer riff, and suddenly they realized they had a potential hit.

"Fake Empire was released on The National's fourth studio album in 2007. The song is a commentary on a generation lost to disillusion and apathy. Women In Music Pt. III is a slightly different proposition. For all of its familiar levity on first listen, much of HAIM’s third album is the product of depression and inertia, loneliness and therapy. Some of its brightest moments turn out to be attempts to smile through desperate circumstances, and their digressions into frustration and anger aren’t so often couched in euphemism.

The album loosely follows the progression of Guy's life. "Living Proof was designed partially as an aural autobiography from the legendary Buddy Guy, opening up with the stark summation “74 Years Young,” then running through songs that often address some aspect of a working musician's life.
Clark’s guitar tone progressed significantly during the year between the release of The Bright Lights EP and Blak and Blu, and Clark attributed most of that to his newly discovered love of overdrive and fuzz pedals. His main tone on “When My Train Pulls In” is a prime example of that, as he layers Analog Man Astro Tone fuzz and Analog Man King of Tone overdrive pedals together to create a massive tone with distinctive distortion that sounds like speakers on the verge of blowing up yet with expressive midrange and clarity.
