With the global pandemic extending further into the future, artists from Seattle recognized a need for renewed focus and funding to support Seattle artists through SARF. Seattle Artist Relief Fund (SARF), a Black-led community response to help provide direct financial support to artists who have been affected by Covid-19. REFILL is a community-driven benefit concert that will be streamed on KEXP’s YouTube channel on Sunday, July 19th starting at 4PM.

Recorded while in quarantine, Ben Gibbard said about this new single, “It’s about a planet that was discovered deep, deep in the cosmos, called Proxima B. The three things you need to know about Proxima B to understand the song are: One, there’s a planet called Proxima B that they think has water on it. It’s somewhat Earth-like. Secondly, it orbits the star called Centauri. And three, there’s been a lot of talk of ‘Ooh, maybe we can get there at some point.’ So I wrote this song in response to that.”

Just wanted to share that on Saturday, I celebrated 10 years of sobriety. Something I once thought was impossible. But with the help of my higher power, and the love and support of others, the time actually just flew by. The real joy is in realizing that I am not alone, that there are fellow human beings who want only the best for each of us. KEXP’s shows like Music Heals shows how much we are in this together, and how much we have to offer each other. It was with the help of others in recovery, that I was able to make it through the loss of my mother, then my brother and later my father. I am so grateful for many things but especially that we can experience our humanity, share our love for others.
If you have the opportunity, I’d love to hear “In This Home on Ice” by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah from their debut album – that was a song that really made me feel great in the early days of my recovery.

“Toulouse, with big amps and all the sound-system. There were a lot of people! The police arrived and tried to stop the show, but people started screaming and telling them to leave. The audience was really sick, but in a good way, very respectful. The cops are gone, victory.”

Singer and guitarist Boyer and bassist Resende formed the pop combo as students at the University of Rouen. Taking their name from a souvenir t-shirt given to Boyer's father in 1980, the duo recruited guitarist Mederic Gontier, and with the addition of drummer Sylvain Marchand a year later, the lineup was complete.

A jazzy version of "A'mour est bleu" which was made famous in 1967 by Vicky Leandros. This instrumental version came out in 1969.
"Hello Nasty" came out on this day in 1998! "Intergalactic" samples the 1969 song "Love is Blue (L'amour est bleu)" by The Jazz Crusaders, so it's an appropriate song for Bastille Day.
In the recent live documentary "The Beastie Boys Story," Ad-Rock mentions that "Hello Nasty" was probably his favorite album they made.

No news when a new album could be released, but KG&TLW, it could be any day. They are music-making machines. They released two albums in 2019 and have release three live albums in 2020 to benefit the Australian bush-fire relief.
Hatchie announced recently on Twitter that she's recording album number two. In the meantime, we have this recent single that is a cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain song originally a duet between Jim Reid and Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval.

L'Epee, the band of Emmanuelle Seigner (Ultra Orange & Emmanuelle), Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), Lionel and Marie Liminana (The Limiñanas). It is very rarely that a musical project lives up to the billing of being a "supergroup". However, the exception to this rule comes in the shape of L'Epee. Far from being defeated by a world seemingly regressing into turmoil, L'Epee's strength comes from a long history of challenging the status quo -- they all share a fierce intelligence and an outsider aesthetic which, over the decades, has been sharpened to a razor's edge.

The Psychotic Monks are not afraid of being different and doing things their way. The four members of the band got together in 2015 and since then they have never stopped evolving around the endless possibilities of rock. Their many shows and tours have earned them the reputation of being an amazing live band. Remember live music? Remember traveling? *sigh*
Did you know that in 2010, Sonic Youth wrote and recorded the whole soundtrack for a French thriller movie called "Lights Out"?
"Lysistrata is a french band (20 years of average age) inspired by the screaming energy of youth. Formed in 2013, their music is between post-rock, noise and math-rock. These boys dive from the solid rock of their virtuosity into a rampant ocean of sonic freedom, screaming and shouting with the exhilaration of free-fall. Once on stage they pack down the vibrations, amplify the tension and let it all come raving out like tomorrow just got cancelled."

This is what you find when you dig deep outside of your comfort level in a record store in Paris. Created in 2010 by Victor Sbrovazzo as a one-man Band, it was completed later by Geoffroy Sourp on drums then by Adam Lanfrey on bass.
We got our hands on this new single from IDLES third album, 'Ultra Mono.' Joe Talbot says about this one, ""A Hymn" is a hymn that rejoices in the sinister flesh-eating virus of the pedestrian. It sings the tune of normal’s teeth sinking into your neck as you sleep stood up with your eyes open. Amen.”
Fontaines D.C. second album, A Hero’s Death will be out on July 31st, and they've recently shared this third single, “Televised Mind.”
They say the song is "...about the echo chamber, and how personality gets stripped away by surrounding approval. People’s opinions get reinforced by constant agreement, and we’re robbed of our ability to feel wrong. We’re never really given the education of our own fallibility. People feign these great beliefs in order to appear trendy, as opposed to independently arriving at their own thoughts."

We’re getting ready to head back to his house and he found a picture of prince and asked who it was. I don’t have any of Prince’s music on my phone but was thinking I could shoot a request to you. We will be in the car with KEXP on for the next half hour and if you were able to fit in a Prince song so he can hear what his music is is like that would be awesome. Thank you so much!

The French version of "Tilted." According to Héloïse Letissier, when she first wrote the song, it was written in English. It was originally recorded under the title "Cripple" for an EP, Mac Abbey, in 2012. However, when she performed the song in Brighton in May 2013, the chorus "I actually do enjoy being a cripple" was poorly received by the audience. Letissier said: "... there was a huge embarrassed silence. I thought it was really ambiguous! But it's not." She reworked the lyrics in French as "Christine" for her 2014 debut album, and from this she made another English version, "Tilted". The English and French versions are not an exact translation and have significant differences in their lyrics, for example the English version begins with "I will die before Methuselah / So I'll fight sleep with ammonia," while the French version may be translated as "I start books at the end / And I hold my head high for nothing " (Je commence les livres par la fin / Et j'ai le menton haut pour un rien).

Beck has declared numerous times that Serge Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson album is a favorite, and "Paper Tiger"s instrumentation and subtle melody are almost certainly a tribute. Gainsbourg used strings in a way that they moved, not just as subtle flavor, but a real lead instrument, and that's what you're hearing here on "Paper Tiger" too.
IRM is the third studio album by French electropop singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, with all songs written and produced by Beck. Well, except "Le Chat Du Café Des Artistes" (written by Jean-Pierre Ferland).
