Good morning and happy Friday. Today is the first anniversary of Chris Cornell's death. Here's an obituary from The Guardian last year: www.theguardian.com
This was the final Cornell song to track before his death. Cornell said of this Prince song,"'Nothing Compares 2 U' … has a timeless relevance for me and practically everyone I know. Sadly, now his own lyrics in this song could not be more relevant than at this moment, and I sing them now in reverence as I pay tribute to this unequaled artist who has given all of our lives so much inspiration and made the world so much more interesting."

This song contains one of the more famous key changes in rock. According to Rick Nielsen, the song begins in B flat, goes to B for two verses, then changes key to C around 2:15 as Robin Zander sings, "Whatever happened to all this season's losers of the year..." The high-pitched sound in the mix was made using an arpeggiator on the keyboard. When the band recorded their next album, "Dream Police," they used a real string section since they had a bigger budget.

Justice are renowned for the enormous amount of sampling on their records. Xavier de Rosnay of the French electronic duo has estimated that on † they sampled around 400 different discs. On this track for instance, they borrowed the hand clap from 50 Cent's "In Da Club," plus samples of Slipknot and Queen. However, none of them are credited. De Rosnay explained to MTV News that this was because, "they are such short samples no one can recognize them. The ones from Slipknot, for example, are just tiny bits of the voice."

This is the late Sharon Jones' version of the classic Woody Guthrie song. In February 1940, Guthrie wrote "This Land is Your Land" in reaction to Irving Berlin's song "God Bless America." Guthrie heard Berlin's song over and over while he traveled cross-country. He became annoyed when he saw that everyone in America did not have land and wealth. Guthrie saw that, even in the depths of the Depression, nearly 20 percent of the nation's wealth rested with one percent of its population.: aam.govst.edu

Born and raised in England's Black Country (aka the West Midlands), Stephen Wilkinson studied sonic arts at London's Middlesex University and was first inspired by '90s electronic acts such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada, but became equally intrigued by mid-20th century British folk.
