HBA to Art Blakey born on this day in 1919.
Moanin' was recorded in 1958.
The Messengers was co-founded in the early ‘50s by drummer Art Blakey and pianist/talented songwriter Horace Silver.
One of the greats that Blakey mentored was tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
Shorter’s work gave new life to Blakey’s band, but perhaps the longest-lasting batch of compositions that were released on the Messengers’ 1958 classic, Moanin’. The album stands as one of jazz’s all-time recordings, largely because of its tunes.

On the Corner was released on this day in 1972.
When he entered the studio in June of 1972, Miles Davis ostensibly wanted to make an album that celebrated Sly Stone and James Brown—and spoke directly to young Black audiences. “It was with On the Corner and Big Fun that I really made an effort to get my music over to young Black people,” he explained in his 1989 autobiography. “They are the ones who buy records and come to concerts, and I had started thinking about building a new audience for the future.”
