Although the title of this classic in German translates to "a little night music," it's the start of the Early Show with Eva Walker!
This is one of the most famous jazz compositions ever recorded. Hancock was just 22 when he released it on his first album, Takin' Off in 1962. Hancock radically re-worked the tune, combining elements of funk, for the album Head Hunters.

That inimitable voice belongs to Yannis Philippakis, frontman for Foals. This is his project with renowned drummer Tony Allen. This collaboration began in 2016. but the recordings were never completed before Tony passed away in April 2020 at the age of 79.
Now, they are finished and a five-track EP will be released on August 30th.

On this day in 1946, Valerie Simpson, of Ashford & Simpson, was born.
She and songwriting partner and husband Nickolas Ashford wrote some of the greatest songs of all-time, from "Let's Go Get Stoned," which gave Ray Charles a number one U.S. R&B hit in 1966, to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "You're All I Need To Get By," and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing."
Happy Birthday to Valerie Simpson, who along with husband and songwriting partner, Nickolas Ashford, wrote this song for Ray Charles.
It went to #1 on the R&B charts in the U.S. in 1966.
On this day in 1970, a party was held to celebrate the official opening of 'Electric Ladyland' studios in New York City. It was named for the Jimi Hendrix Experience album Electric Ladyland. At the opening party were Patti Smith, Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood; all would go on to record there.
