"Take Five” was originally intended to be a drum solo, but after collaborating with Desmond, it became a jazz standard that inspired other 5/4 themes, such as Lalo Schifrin’s classic “Mission: Impossible.” “Take Five” became such a part of the American vernacular that it was even used as the theme of NBC’s Today Show in the 1960s. As directed by Desmond’s estate after his death in 1977, all of the royalties from the song go to the American Red Cross. Read more here blogs.loc.gov

What song would you include on the next Golden Record!? Eva votes for "My Girl" by The Temptations! "Known for their fancy footwork, vocal versatility and showmanship, The Temptations are a major influence on R&B and soul music. No other group could do things the way the Temptations did: They danced with elegant precision, sang with tight harmonies and sported the sharpest wardrobe in show business. Almost any member of the group could take the lead: Eddie with his sweet falsetto (“Just My Imagination”), Paul with his gritty baritone (“Don’t Look Back”), Melvin with his rumbling bass (“Old Man River”) and, of course, David, whose soulful second tenor was frequently called upon to handle the group’s up-front assignments (“Beauty Is Only Skin-Deep”)." www.motownmuseum.org

Born on this day in 1946 – Ralf Hütter, German singer and keyboard player in Kraftwerk! "Kraftwerk was primarily concerned with both reflecting upon and advancing their modern age. Kraftwerk co-founder Ralf Hutter once said, the question is, ‘What does Germany sound like today? That’s where we started.’ Kraftwerk was founded by fellow students Hutter and Schneider in 1970, after they had played around as The Organisation’ in the late 60’s. They wanted the music of this new incarnation to forge a new cultural identity for post-war Germany which at the time was regurgitating the popular culture of America." classicalbumsundays.com

Happy Birthday to Ralf Hütter--German singer and keyboard player in Kraftwerk--born on this day in 1946. "From a radio interview Hutter said, ‘We first developed our music instruments from tapes and electronic oscillators and wave generators and filters in order to express our musical ideas. Today we can do it best with all electronic instruments. We cannot play science fiction music on the guitar – It’s an instrument that was invented in the middle ages in Spain. So, when we want do the spirit of today you have to choose the medium of today to do it. There is no difference between a musician and a technician.’" classicalbumsundays.com

In the liner notes to the Velvet Underground's box set Peel Slowly And See, Lou Reed wrote, "'Rock and Roll' is about me. If I hadn't heard rock and roll on the radio, I would have had no idea there was life on this planet. Which would have been devastating - to think that everything, everywhere was like it was where I come from. That would have been profoundly discouraging. Movies didn't do it for me. TV didn't do it for me. It was the radio that did it." KEXP's mission is to enrich your life by championing music and discovery. Our vision is a connected and compassionate world embracing curiosity and a shared love of music.

Happy National Radio Day! Radio play can make such a difference for bands. Read how radio play was pivotal in R.E.M.'s career below! This was R.E.M.'s first single, released in 1981, before they signed to a major label. -- "This song was pivotal to the continuation of our career," drummer Bill Berry explained. "Most fans may not realize that for two years before "Murmur" (1983) was released, we barely made financial ends meet by playing tiny clubs around the southeast. Our gasoline budget prevented us from venturing further. Put simply, our existence was impoverished. College radio and major city club scenes embraced this song and expanded our audience to the extent that we moved from small clubs to medium-sized venues and the additional revenue made it possible to logically pursue this wild musical endeavor. I dare not contemplate what our fate would have been had this song not appeared when it did."
