"I Confess" was a mix of Dave Wakeling's personal experiences and sensationalized stories he read in magazines. "I had a bit of an obsession with what was called 'Photo Love' in England. They were those teen magazines where they had photographs with bubbles coming out of their mouths. Broken hearts and redemption, that sort of thing. I loved the cloying, hyper-driven emotion of them, and I'd had my photograph as a pin-up in a couple of them". Wakeling then connected his "own tawdry tales of young love" with a tabloid story about a man who "had been caught having sex with his new bride's sister on their wedding day."

Inspired by the sight of Bowie's producer-engineer Tony Visconti embracing his lover by the Berlin Wall, the song tells the story of two lovers, one from East and one from West Berlin. “‘Heroes’” was written and recorded in the summer of 1977 in West Berlin’s Hansa Studios, which overlooked the Berlin Wall and its watchtowers. Bowie had decamped to the city from LA after cocaine addiction and a failing marriage had nearly destroyed him.

Yard Act are a cantankerous new Leeds rock band featuring Ryan Needham of Menace Beach on bass. Yard Act is such a new entity that they only managed three gigs before the COVID shutters came down – ‘Fixer Upper’ hasn’t even had its live debut yet. They have been putting the time to good use, however, with some 40 demos coming into existence during lockdown. Smith’s vocal and lyrical style was honed by his experiences giving spoken word performances around Leeds and also eschews melody in favor of mood. “I’m interested in pushing it as far as you can in terms of how much you can cram into a song,” he says.

Bernard Sumner revealed in a 2012 interview with GQ that he wrote the song differently than his normal process, in that he created it from scratch rather than listening to a piece of music first to suggest the words. "I did that with "Love Vigilantes...It was quite tongue-in-cheek. It was about Vietnam. It was about a soldier that came back and his wife was sent a telegram to say that he was dead." "You can take the ending one way or another." Sumner added. "He's either dead and he's come back as a ghost and he sees her or he's not dead and the telegram was a mistake."

Listener request from Justin "My wife Donna and I are celebrating 14 years married today:)" The lyrics to "Just Like Heaven" were written by frontman Robert Smith, who drew inspiration from a past trip to the sea shore with his future wife. Smith's memories of the trip formed the basis for the song's accompanying music video. "Mary dances with me in the video because she was the girl in the song, so it had to be her." Pope later commented, "Poole can honestly lay claim to being the only featured female in any Cure video, ever."

Band of Gypsys is a live album by Jimi Hendrix and the first without his original group, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It was recorded on January 1, 1970, at the Fillmore East in New York City with Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums, frequently referred to as the Band of Gypsys. The album mixes funk and rhythm and blues elements with hard rock and jamming, an approach which later became the basis of funk rock. It contains previously unreleased songs and was the last full-length Hendrix album released before his death.

The New Vaudeville Band was a group created by songwriter Geoff Stephens in 1966 to record his novelty composition "Winchester Cathedral", a song inspired by the dance bands of the 1920s and a Rudy Vallee megaphone-style vocal. To his surprise, the song became a transatlantic hit that autumn, reaching the Top 10 in the United Kingdom and rising to #1 in the United States. The New Vaudeville Band sung through their hands to imitate a megaphone sound on this 1966 track.

Maurice White started writing “Shining Star” one night while recording in Colorado, he’d blissed out on how bright the stars were in the sky that night. Fishbone is an American rock band formed in 1979 in Los Angeles, California, which plays a fusion of ska, punk, funk, metal, reggae, and soul. They've been called ska-punk, punk-funk and ska-punk-funk-metal. “The Rough Guide to Rock” deemed Fishbone’s music “jazz/hard rock/ska/funk”; a Rolling Stone writer threw up his hands and went with “orgasmic urban gumbo.” None of these labels aptly sum up the sound of a band that seems to have ingested a century’s worth of American and Caribbean popular music, nor do they capture the manic spirit of the group’s concerts, which earned Fishbone a reputation as one of the world’s greatest live acts. Nilufer Yanya just announced a new EP, 'Feeling Lucky?'. It will be released on December 11th. In the video for this new song which she co-wrote with Nick Hakim, she is a flight attendant at 38,000 feet. “If you ask me one more question, I’m about to crash,” she sings, braving turbulence and strumming the electric guitar. “The video for ‘Crash’ takes place on a flight,” Yanya said in a statement. “Last year, doing a lot of touring I found myself becoming more and more anxious each time I boarded a plane, something that was new for me as I’ve never had a fear of flying. With each flight we took it felt like the turbulence was getting worse and I was convinced my luck was due to run out. I didn’t write ‘Crash’ about being on an airplane, but I really like it visually as an embodiment of the song.” www.rollingstone.com Music video for "Crash": youtu.be

In honor of Neil Young's birthday tomorrow. Neil Young’s “Southern Man” came out in 1970 (via After the Gold Rush), but the singer-songwriter thinks it’s just as relevant today — with one caveat. He’s not just singing about the South anymore — but the whole country. Young posted a 2019 Live performance of the song on his Archives, writing: “Here’s me as an old guy singin’ his 50-year-old song that was written after countless years of racism in the USA. And look at us today! This has been going on for way too long. It’s not just ‘Southern Man’ now. It’s everywhere across the USA. It’s time for real change, new laws, new rules for policing.” To read more about it, go here... www.rollingstone.com

"Mad World" was the band's third single release and first chart hit. Curt Smith has said that the intention was to gain attention from it and hopefully build up a little following.
