Mitski wrote most of 'Laurel Hell's' songs before and during 2018, finishing the album during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
She described the album as a "soundtrack for transformation, a map to the place where vulnerability and resilience, sorrow and delight, error and transcendence can all sit within our humanity, can all be seen as worthy of acknowledgment, and ultimately, love" Indeed, she expressed that she wrote the album as she "needed love songs about real relationships that are not power struggles to be won or lost" as well as "songs that could help me forgive both others and myself. In its best known incarnation of the original 1959 song written and recorded by Richard Berry, garage-rock protopunkers, The Sonics, covered the song on their 1965 album, Here Are The Sonics. Driven by haphazardly recorded fuzz guitar, a big driving drum sound, screaming vocals and a saxophone break, it epitomized their sound at that time. The Sonics changed the chord progression from the original G-Am-Bb-Am, a 1-2m-m3-2m progression, to a basic 1-4-5-4 progression, which in G would be simply G-C-D-C. Camp Cope have shared the title track off their forthcoming LP, 'Running With Hurricane.' The Melbourne band's third full length release is due out March 25, and is named after the song of the same name by Australian folk group Redgum.
The album was produced by Georgia Maq and engineer Anna Laverty at Sing Sing Recording Studios outside Melbourne. Of the new LP, Maq said in a press release:
"The first record was us diving into whatever Camp Cope created, the second album was us when we were in the thick of it, and then this album is about how we’ve come out the other side. And we’ve come out stronger, more loving, more peaceful and better friends."
