"Actually, You Can" is Deerhoof's eighteenth studio album. It’s Deerhoof’s ”baroque gone DIY” LP, and is described in a new album bio by Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz, Sad13) as “a genre-abundant record that uses technicolor vibrancy and arpeggiated muscularity to offer a vital shock from capitalism’s purgatorial hold.” (Whew!): bit.ly

Beach Bunny will be at Neumos TODAY. bit.ly "'Oxygen' is a song about the perils of navigating romantic feelings, the joy that comes with allowing love to happen, and the act of letting go of the anxiety and our inner voices that make us feel undeserving of love. I wanted it to have a playful vibe with anthemic choruses and a big, blissed out ending," says frontwoman Lili Trifilio. bit.ly beachbunny.bandcamp.com

Bonobo's new album, 'Fragments' is set to release in January 2022 and features the talents of artists like Jamila Woods, Kadha Bonet, and Joji. Woods said of her participation on "Tides": "I connected with the track as soon as I heard it. It felt like rain and waves to me before I even knew the project had a theme of cycles and tides, so it all came together very organically.” Video for "Tides" here: youtu.be Back in 2017 Bonobo played live on KEXP and you can check out the full performance here: youtu.be bonobomusic.bandcamp.com bonobomusic.com

When Columbian duo Simón Mejía and Liliana Saumet had nearly finished recording their latest LP, the group took part in an age-old ritual: a pagamento, or payment. It’s a ceremony “to pay back what you have taken from the Earth". Bomba Estéreo spent a night making offerings and sharing profound conversation with a mamo, a shaman of the Arhuaco people. From Dinosaur Jr's fifth album, Where You Been (1993). J Mascis recalled the story behind "Start Choppin" in an interview with Rolling Stone: "I remember the title came about because we cut the tape to put some different versions together. I think I just said, "Start chopping," or something. All the stops and starts is just how the song was written. I think the edits were just, like, maybe the verse sounded better on one take, so we could end the whole thing. It wasn't very big edits on tape; it was little things. It was just like one verse or another."

'This one started out as an idea to mix Afrobeat with Giorgio Moroder–style synth vibes. The end section with Alfred’s korego (Ghanaian 2-stringed folk guitar) solo was already there when we got into the studio, but then we added the big kick drum that happens underneath and Owen from Hot Chip’s crazy drum machine percussion at the end, which gave it a futuristic Afro feel when mixed with the more talking drum parts' ibibiosoundmachine.bandcamp.com -- See Ibibio Sound Machine in a live performance for KEXP listeners from London during International Clash Day in 2019: www.youtube.com

Leo Nocentelli is the guitarist and co-founder of The Meters. His 1971 album, "Another Side," has just been reissued. "Gorgeous if era-bound, Another Side comes with a certain sadness, thanks to the content, but also because we know what happened next. Nocentelli had a sterling second act with the Meters, yet his songwriting benefited him in limited ways—like many artists, particularly Black ones, he was cheated out of substantial royalties.": pitchfork.com -- This is his cover of the classic song by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

Playing The Tractor Friday, April 1st, 2022. New Orleans, LA's Hurray for the Riff Raff share new song “Rhododendron,” announce new album 'Life on Earth' is out on February 18, 2022. Riff Raff's latest is a homespun and uplifting track with Yo La Tengo vibes and, as Alynda Segarra explained in a press release, a strong connection to the natural world. 'Rhododendron', Segarra said, is about "finding rebellion in plant life. Being called by the natural world and seeing the life that surrounds you in a way you never have. A mind expansion. A psychedelic trip. A spiritual breakthrough. Learning to adapt, and being open to the wisdom of your landscape. Being called to fix things in your own backyard, your own community." bit.ly hftrr.bandcamp.com www.hurrayfortheriffraff.com

"Mathematics" walks us through a series of increasingly huge numbers in order to paint a picture of some of the key social injustices Mos Def saw around him in the late 1990s. Some of the numbers are harmless statistics ("40% of Americans own a cell phone") or clever shout-outs ("6 million ways to die" is from a Snoop Dogg song). But many of the figures named are insidious numbers and proportions that describe the effects of poverty, drugs and racism on urban Black communities ("the white unemployment rate is nearly more than triple for Black"). : www.shmoop.com

Over a decade into their existence, Chastity Belt remains true to itself. It’s a joke told in a college town that became a living, breathing rock band. It’s a quartet of four friends–Julia Shapiro, Lydia Lund, Gretchen Grimm, and Annie Truscott–in dialogue with each other and the world. Across four albums to dazzling effect, their work stands as a deeply moving extended meditation on parties, relationships, power dynamics, sincerity, and aging–all delivered without even a hint of heavy-handedness. “Fake” / “Fear” the band’s new single, picks up where their self-titled fourth album left off. “Fear”’s snarling riff, soaring chorus, and Moby-Dick imagery came to singer and guitarist Lydia Lund after she dreamt of what she described as “gut-wrenching fear” caused by a “neverending series of unknowns.” chastity-belt.bandcamp.com Read KEXPs Jasmine Alberton's article about the making of the new video for "Fake": www.kexp.org
