“I hold this one so close to my heart. ‘Competition’ comes from a state of always comparing yourself to others and how ruthless that competitive nature can be towards yourself and towards others. The song is a reminder of how much stronger we are together.” – Amber Mark

VBS means, of course, Vacation Bible School. Lucy Dacus says “I wrote the song in the van on the way to Nashville Video after seeing one of those readerboards outside a church advertising a wholesome church camp for kids,” she added. “I thought about my first boyfriend, who I met at VBS, the resident bad boy who loved Slayer and weed more than Jesus. I took it upon myself to save him, and make him stop doing drugs (with an exception for snorting nutmeg). God, I was so lame.” www.rollingstone.com

Ritual Union is the third studio album by Swedish electronic music band Little Dragon. The album cover is a collage of married couples about which the band said, "It's a bunch of pics of our parents and relatives so there's that obvious connection [the overt idea of marriage]. But it's basically one perspective on the whole 'Ritual Union' theme which is pretty ambiguous. It can represent a band, a marriage, humanity, the universe... what ever you feel connected to."
Released on this day back in 1989. Another summer. Sound of the funky drummer.
