R.I.P. Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed, 1942 - 2013. He passed away yesterday at the age of 71
A concept album of sorts whereby Reed ruminated on the deaths of two close friends - songwriter Doc Pomus and a woman known as "Rita" (assumed to be Warhol Factory figure Rotten Rita)
His second solo full-length
The earliest version of "Heroin" was recorded in the band's Ludlow Street loft in 1965
Co-written with his brother, Roger, and Daniel Lanois
Unsurprisingly, this Velvet Underground cover appears on her covers record

Beat Happening cover!
Loaded with hits, as they say
The Toronto band's take was based on VU's version of the song from their 1969: Velvet Underground Live LP
In mourning times such as these, you have to mix just the right amount of mope + solemnity with your indie pop

Lou Reed's ode to NYC in one, tidy LP (whose cover art, with a posturing, jeans-clad Reed, screams "Yo, buddy, I'm penning pointed, pensive songs here, watch it!")
All you kids out there: learn to play guitar like Tom Verlaine
Appears on their 1973 S/T debut (also released as a single b/w "Personality Crisis")

Founding members Perry Farrell and Eric Avery bonded over a shared love of bands like The Velvet Underground, among others
Charted at #199
One of the band's favourite covers, and one they played often live. Yoko Ono's "Listen, the Snow Is Falling" and Jonathan Richman's "Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste" are also included on Copenhagen

"Life's good... but not fair at all"
Reed got his musical start with a Doo Wop group called The Jades in the '50s

Referencing several folks from Lou Reed's Factory days - Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell -
"Walk on the Wild Side" sampled here and, to far less acclaim, by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch in 1991
Pro tip: cue this song up just before you go out for a night on the town... weird times guaranteed, just like these three guys (WONDER HOW THEY ALL GOT SO THIN AND COULD STAY AWAKE ALL NIGHT?!?) - tiny.cc
Bowie was recently voted the best dressed person in British history, beating Shaun Ryder by a sizable margin
Inspired by Reed's observations of goings-on at The Factory, of which he said "I would hear people say the most astonishing things, the craziest things, the funniest things, the saddest things"
Also known as the song Jesse Eisenberg's character in Adventureland seduced Kristen Stewart to
From a 1991 split 7" with Melvins, who in turn covered "Venus in Furs" (take some time to read the very funny, handwritten liner notes too) - www.discogs.com
Always worth re-watching their unplugged performance - youtu.be
The subtext for most of this album is: have a banana, you need potassium
Reed wrote "I'll Be Your Mirror" specifically for Nico
Covering Will Oldham (a.k.a. Palace when he penned this tune)
OK, mix morphine and dexedrine, got it!
LIVE TONIGHT at 7:00 pm PST here on KEXP! They're playing for a full hour so don't miss a second
Wonder where all that pink smoke is coming from...
Covering, you guessed it, The Velvet Underground
Widely considered a major disappointment following his previous LP, 1975's Metal Machine Music *cough cough*
In this case the femme fatale in question is Edie Sedgwick
