From 1968....I was there at the first Can show in Cologne. --- Can was formed in 1968, and are from Cologne, Germany. This first one is way too easy! 1968 was the year that Can was formed, 1971 was the year that they released their album Tago Mago. I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City. --- In 1970, Suicide were said to be the first band to use the term "punk music" in advertising for one of their shows when they used the term on one of their flyers. Check out this video of Ghost Rider. www.youtube.com
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band. I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime." --- The you'll never make a dime is in reference of Captain Beefheart's music being so hard for general public to stomach, and they never broke into the mainstream scene.

I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan. --- The Paradise Garage with Larry Levan was the place be from 1978 to 1987. The Paradise Garage's business model was largely inspired by David Mancuso's parties at The Loft: no liquor was served, there were no sales of food or beverages, and the club was not open to the general public.
I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes. --- Osborne from Jamaica was a big part in the music scene. His album Truths and Rights is considered a notable roots reggae success. All the underground hits. All the Modern Lovers tracks. --- Modern Lovers formed in 1970 and lasted with the original lineup till 1974. It featured Richman and bassist Ernie Brooks with drummer David Robinson (later of the Cars) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads). "Protopunk" is a term often used to describe the Modern Lovers.

You want to make a Yaz record. --- Yaz consisted of former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke (keyboards) and Alison Moyet (vocals). They formed in 1981 after Clarke responded to an ad that Moyet placed in a UK music magazine.
Pere Ubu, --- Pere Ubu is a band that I was introduced to at a much younger age. Back then, I remember liking it, but not fully in bracing them at the time. As I researched Pere Ubu for this show, I think I might have rediscovered something great.
Outsiders --- Band from Cleveland, OH, who had such hits like "Time Won't Let Me"

Outsiders --- So, one thing I've learned today is, if a band's name is The Outsiders they just might be pretty rocking. This Outsiders band is Dutch.
The Nation of Ulysses --- DC band from Dischord!! Vocals sound like Guy Picciotto. (Rites of Spring, One Last Wish, and Fugazi) Known for their sharp dress, and high energy live shows.
The Trojans --- From the London Ska scene in 1986. Gaz Mayall from the Trojans is the eldest son of Blues legend John Mayall.
Black Dice --- Forming in 1997 their early shows seldom lasted more than fifteen minutes and were characterised by violent performances where injuries were often sustained by the band and audience alike.
Todd Terry --- Much of Terry's early work, in the late 1980s, is considered a milestone in the development of both progressive and modern deep house.
The Germs --- Pat Smear's band before Nirvana. The Germs are a highly influential punk band from Los Angeles, California, who disbanded after their lead singers suicide on December 7, 1980.
Section 25 --- Post punk electronic band who played with many other Factory Records bands like Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Blurt, The Durutti Column, Crispy Ambulance and New Order. Their debut 7" "Girls Don't Count", was released in July 1980 on Factory Records, produced by Ian Curtis and Rob Gretton of Joy Division.
Althea & Donna --- Althea & Donna started at the ages of 17, and 18 years old. Uptown Top Ranking became a hit in the UK February of 1978.

Pere Ubu --- I didn't mention this in my earlier comments about Pere Ubu, but they are from Cleveland, OH, and the singer David Thomas is the only constant member throughout the years. Yet another side note. Dave Thomas of Wendy's fame opened his first Wendy's in Columbus, OH. Weird!!
Dorothy Ashby --- Ashby extended the popularization of jazz harp past a novelty, showing how the instrument can be utilized seamlessly as much a bebop instrument as the saxophone.
PIL --- John Lydon was former singer of the highly influential punk band Sex Pistols, and would later form Public Image Ltd. in 1978.
the Fania All-Stars --- The Fania All-Stars were formed in 1968 to showcase her musicians who were on her label Fania Records.
the Bar-Kays --- This band formed in 1966, and were chosen by Otis Redding in 1967 to be his backing band. This song was released in 1978, and reached 11 on R&B charts.
the Human League --- The Human League formed in 1977. "Don't You Want Me" is the Human League's best selling single, and reached the number 1 spot in the US, and the UK!!
the Normal --- The Normal is a producer named Daniel Miller. Miller started the label Mute Records, and is home to music from such acts as Depeche Mode, Erasure, Fad Gadget, Goldfrapp, Grinderman, Moby, Nitzer Ebb, Wire, and Yazoo.
Lou Reed --- Lou Reed was a member of the Velvet Underground, who left for a successful solo career.
Scott Walker --- This guy has been performing since 1958, and is currently on the label 4AD. He just released an album in 2012 called Bish Bosch. Now that is longevity!!
Niagra --- Munich supergroup project fronted by Klaus Weiss. Klaus had become fascinated with the possibility of creating a drum orchestra out of the wealth of Munich rock and jazz drummers, and thus Niagara was born featuring percussionists from all backgrounds

Sun Ra --- Sun Ra was a prolific jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy," musical compositions and performances.
Scientists --- The name for the Australian band Scientists came from member Kim Salmon's childhood interest in science. Specifically nuclear physics.
Royal Trux --- Royal Trux was founded after Neil Hagerty band Pussy Galore disbanded. Pussy Galore also included Jon Spencer!!
10cc --- 10cc are an English art rock band who did very well in the 70's!!
Eric B. and Rakim --- Eric B. and Rakim are from Long Island, New York. The duo were referred to by the journalist Tom Terrell of NPR as "the most influential DJ/MC combo in contemporary pop music period." Personally, I can't tell you how many times I've used the phrase "Don't Sweat the Technique".

the Electric Prunes --- Thanks to Seattle DJ Pat O'Day at KJR (AM), the Electric Prunes were thought to be from Seattle, because they were big in Seattle before being big nationally. They were from Los Angeles.
Gil Scott-Heron --- HUGE influence on hip-hop artist of all generations. Gil Scott-Heron was active till his death in 2011, and even released "I'm New Here" in 2010.
the Slits --- Early punk group who toured with the Clash and the Buzzcocks in 1977.
Faust --- Another German krautrock band, they formed in 1971, and released an album on Polydor which sold poorly, but had much critical acclaim, and thus gained a devoted fan base!
Mantronix --- Mantronix was an influential 1980s hip hop and electro funk music group founded by DJ Kurtis Mantronik (Kurtis el Khaleel), and rapper MC Tee (Touré Embden). Kutis Mantronik incorporated synthesizers and samplers into the rhythmatic mix instead of succumbing to the popular use of samples simply as pop hooks.

the Swans --- The Swans formed in 1982 and were part of the 1980's no wave movement out of New York.
