Today's Bastille Day! Of course, Bastille Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with the storming of the Bastille on July 14th, 1789. M83 frontman Anthony Gonzalez also wrote the soundtrack for the Tom Cruise space-janitor flick Oblivion.
Forever changed by Lost In Translation? (Inadvertent Sofia Coppola kick this morning.) The band was originally called Dead Elvis, but Elvis's estate threatened to sue. The band named their first LP that instead.
This Timeless Turning was the third LP from Sky Cries Mary. The band recorded it at the historic Robert Lang Studios in Shoreline, WA- home to many a new-home benefit. The band was soon after signed to Warner Bros.

Martin Gore of Depeche Mode is a vegetarian. Not the scary Morrissey kind- presumably a normal one. "Enjoy the Silence" was featured on Depeche Mode's Violator LP, and was their first album to break the US Billboard Top 10.
New Order cover of the highest order. Around the Well collected Iron & Wine b-sides and covers, including tracks originally by Stereolab, Postal Service, and Flaming Lips. Sam Beam will release a covers record later in July.

"Teardrop" was originally supposed to be sung by Madonna, but the band members preferred Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins instead. If only we could hear the Madge version... It peaked at No. 10 on the UK Charts.

Oscar's debut EP Beautiful Words came out in late June. He has tour dates scheduled into the fall- all contained in Europe. It was called "music to hide out in the corner of a club to" by The Guardian, which feels a tad reductive.
The Replacements played this track and "Bastards of Young" on Saturday Night Live. They were drunk and swore during the broadcast, resulting in a lifetime ban from the program. I'm sure they were really bummed.

Happy Birthday to the great Tonya Donelly! Tonya formed Belly in 1991 while she was still in Throwing Muses. The band's Star release from 1993 easily eclipsed the Muses' commercial success, selling over 800k copies in the US alone.
The reunited, reinvigorated Veruca Salt have US tour dates scheduled through July- no Seattle date as of yet. The band's new LP Ghost Notes has received very good reviews, and is their first record since 2006.
Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black does not have Professor Griff on it, just FYI. "Cant Truss It" samples Sly & The Family Stone, James Brown, George Clinton, and Ofra Haza, among others.
Brand-new Chemical Brothers! The group just released their first record since 2010- Born in the Echoes. In the years since that LP, the group has also written the soundtrack for Hanna and Black Swan.
Hello Nasty was released on this day in 1998. The album won the Best Alternative Music Album award at the 1999 Grammys, further proving that no-one understands what that category means. It sold 681k albums in its first week.
Best Tricky track? "Black Steel" is a sort-of cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos." It also has one of the most 90s music videos of all time (which is a good thing): www.youtube.com.
Will forever soundtrack Michael Cera running in Juno- just sayin'. "A Well Respected Man" was first featured on the Kinks' Kwyet Kinks EP in the UK, and was later included on the Kinkdom US release in 1965.
Radiohead will start working on a new record full-time this fall. Expect a new release in 2019? Those guitar sounds have to be just right. Also, this track was covered by Gillian Welch to sublime effect.

TV On The Radio's sophomore EP Young Liars was the band's first release with second-vocalist Kyp Malone. That EP also featured an a cappella version of the Pixies track "Mr. Grieves."
Trompe Le Monde was the last Pixies LP before their break-up. The record features significantly less Kim Deal, resulting in an album some critics consider the first Frank Black solo LP. What it lacks in Kim, it makes up for with a Jesus & Mary Chain cover.

Kristin Hersh founded Throwing Muses with her step-sister and birthday girl Tonya Donelly. The Real Ramona was Donelly's LP with the Muses, and she contributed two tracks to the record ("Not Too Soon" and "Honeychain.").

Mikal Cronin will be at the Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival this year (Sept. 5-7). Mikal's latest record, MCIII, came out back in May. It's his third record (hence, y'know, the MCIII designation).

Not to be confused with the Napalm Death-side project of the same name, London group Lull just released their debut self-titled EP, heavily inspired by shoegaze pioneers. They have shows scheduled throughout London until the end of the summer.
Sunny Day Real Estate refused to do promo for their debut LP, doing just one interview and posing for one promotional photo. They posed for an ad for Nordstrom's though, so at least they had their priorities set straight.
Montreal group Ought will release a new album, Sun Coming Down, on September 18th. After the group formed, the band members all lived together in a communal band practice space, which sounds quite unsanitary.
The Fall's "Oh! Brother" was featured on their 1984 LP The Wonderful and Frightening World Of.... This album ended the "twin drummer" phase of The Fall's career. Mark E. Smith probably had something to do with that.

St. Germain is the name of a popular french liqueur, as well as the French DJ/producer. After many years of not releasing music, St. Germain will release a new album this October. Tourist has sold over three million copies worldwide.

The first single from Stevie Wonder's Talking Book LP, "Superstition" was Stevie's first No. 1 hit since a live version of "Fingertips - Part 1 & 2" hit No. 1 in 1963. Talking Book featured guest spots from Jeff Beck, Ray Parker, Jr. and Buzz Feiten, among others.
