Jason Swinscoe formed the electronic and progressive jazz-influenced act, The Cinematic Orchestra in 1999 with a vision of organic instrumentation and electronic production blending. Miles Davis' "So What" made such an impact on modal jazz that it got it's own chord! The "So What chord" is a particular 5-note chord voicing. From the bottom note upwards, it consists of three perfect fourth intervals followed by a major third interval.
DJ Shadow has a great ear for samples! "What Does Your Soul Look Like" contains Alan Parsons Project, David Young, Shawn Phillips, A dialogue from the horror film "Prince of Darkness", & a sax sample from The Heath Brothers.
Shades of Blue is a remix album by American hip hop musician Madlib over the archives of Blue Note Records, an American Jazz label established from the 1940s.
The drums off "Transit Ride" are sampled from "Synthetic Substitution" by Melvin Bliss (1973). The song also contains lyrical/vocal samples from "Delancey Stree" tby Dana Dane back in 1987.
The drums off "Where I'm From" are from James Brown's "Funky Drummer". The band also sampled KC & The Sunshine Band on this track.
"Take A Walk on the Wild Side", a song describing a series of individuals and their journeys to New York City, was also produced by David Bowie.
Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg has stated that because of the use of the "Walk on the Wild Side" sample, the group barely received any money for the single due to royalties.

Radioheads opening track of their 1995 album, The Bends. Rumor has it this is the only song written during The Bends recording session. It was recorded one night when the band returned to the studio after consuming a great amount of alcohol. Lead singer Thom Yorke did vocals lying down while intoxicated.
Containing former members of Spacemen 3, The Darkside was formed in 1989 led by Pete Bain (Bassman) in Warwickshire, England.
Fun fact: In their early years, drummer Damon Krukowsk didn't own a drum kit, so he borrowed one from his Harvard classmate Conan O'Brien, who'd bought a kit but had recently given up playing it. This drum kit can be heard on many of Galaxie 500's early recordings.

Bright Eyes covering the Daniel Johnston classic song "Devil Town", the first track off his album 1990, released the same year. "The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered" is a 2004 two-disc set featuring covers of Daniel Johnston songs by a variety of different artists.
According to songwriter, Martin Gore, "Personal Jesus" was inspired by the book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley. He quotes, "It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?"

"Prodigy" was heavily featured in the 1997 political action thriller film, The Jackal, starring Bruce Willis, Richard Gere and Sidney Poitier. The drums in the song are samples from "It's a New Day" by Skull Snaps, which later became well known as the beat to the track Clubbed to Death, which was used as the theme tune to The Matrix.
Chemical Brothers originally started as "The Dust Brothers" after the American production team famous for their work with the Beastie Boys. In 1995, The Dust Brothers were threatened with a lawsuit by the original Dust Brothers US production team, so they decided to change their name. They chose "The Chemical Brothers" after one of their more popular songs, "Chemical Beats." The Chemical Brothers DJ Ed Simon's grandmother thought the group should be called "The Grit Brothers," but the name didn't stick.
Tones on Tail was a musical side project of Daniel Ash of Bauhaus, along with art school friend Glenn Campling in 1982. The band's name is a reference to the way calibration tones were recorded on the "tail" of reel-to-reel tape. The band disbanded in 1984 shortly before Ash and Haskins went on to form Love and Rockets

Fun Fact: Gary Jules covered "Mad World" for the 2001 movie Donnie Darko. The director hoped to end the film with the U2 track "MLK," but couldn't afford the rights. So composer Michael Andrews and childhood friend Gary Jules made a rough recording of this Tears for Fears song to see if the director thought it would be suitable.
Mezzanine is listed on The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time for both Rolling Stone and NME. It's also listed as one of the most important records of the 1990s from Pitchfork.
When asked about his strangest concert experience, Morcheeba's multi-instrumentalist Ross Godfrey said, "I took my mum to see Bruce Springsteen a couple of years ago; it was a great gig. A few days later, we were playing at the Hollywood Bowl, and in the box right in front of me sat half of the E Street Band. It made it very hard to play, but they seemed to like the music. At one point, they were all on their feet, clapping and singing along."

"Obvious Child" was recorded live in the streets of Pelourinho Square of Salvador, Brazil in 1988. According to Simon, microphones were hung from windows or on telephone poles to capture the performances. "Hundreds of people gathered. It was an amazing day — an amazing recording experience."
