Gabriel originally wrote "Don't Give Up" from a reference point of American roots music and he approached country singer Dolly Parton to sing it with him. However, Parton turned it down, so his friend Kate Bush took her place.
After the passing of the band's bassist, Gerard Smith, lead singer stated this before announcing their new album Seeds, "We've been through a lot of stuff in the past few years that could have stopped the band cold, but I'm glad we got it together and took stock of the unique connection we have between each other because the record is, 1,000 percent, without a doubt, the best thing we've ever done."
After Mark Mulcahy's wife Melissa died suddenly in 2008, over a dozen artists contributed exclusive tracks to the album to help Mulcahy continue making music while he was raising his three-year-old twin daughters. This song is one of them.

(Pretty Young Thing)", "Black or White", "Workin' Day and Night", and "Whatever Happens" along with the Jackson 5 song "ABC" and Michael Jackson's album Music and Me.
