According to legend, before the group recorded, Galaxie 500 drummer Damon Krukowski didn't own a drum kit, so he borrowed one from his Harvard classmate Conan O'Brien, who'd bought a kit but had recently given up playing it. This drum kit can be heard on many of Galaxie 500's early recordings...

Former Velvet Underground bassist Doug Yule stated that the main signature "riff" of the song was finalized in the studio just before the tracks were recorded, and it was achieved by Lou Reed playing "cranked-up very loud" through a large Sunn amplifier. The drums on the recording were also performed by Doug Yule, as Velvet drummer Maureen Tucker was pregnant at the time and not present during the Loaded sessions.
In 2001, PJ Harvey had this to say about "Stories From the City": "I wanted everything to sound as beautiful as possible. Having experimented with some dreadful sounds on Is This Desire? and To Bring You My Love - where I was really looking for dark, unsettling, nauseous-making sounds - Stories From The City... was the reaction. Many credit The Posies heavier sound on Frosting on the Beater due to Don Fleming's (Dinosaur Jr., Thurston Moore) production work on the record. The band also remade their hit on Frosting on the Beater, "Flavor of the Month", as "Voyage of the Aquanauts" for the series Bill Nye the Science Guy.
