At a Sex Pistols show in 1976, Ian Curtis met future bandmembers Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook. They were trying to form a band, and Curtis immediately proposed himself as vocalist and lyricist. The rest is history.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" was written in August 1979 by Curtis. The band debuted the song supporting the Buzzcocks on their UK tour from September to November 1979. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is forever inscribed on Ian's memorial stone.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" was first released as a single in June 1980 and became the band's first charting hit, reaching number 13 in the UK Singles Chart. That October, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" peaked at number 42 on the American dance chart. It also reached number 1 in New Zealand in June 1981 after Curtis' death.

After the death of Ian Curtis, the remaining members of Joy Division renamed the band New Order. Their first release was a re-recording of "Ceremony" as a stand-alone single backed with "In a Lonely Place", with guitarist Bernard Sumner taking over lead vocals. Sumner said that he had to put the "Ceremony" rehearsal tape as sung by Curtis through a graphic equalizer to transcribe the lyrics.
