At a Sex Pistols show in 1976, Ian Curtis met future bandmembers Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook. They were trying to form a band, and Curtis immediately proposed himself as vocalist and lyricist. The rest is history.
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" was written in August 1979 by Curtis. The band debuted the song supporting the Buzzcocks on their UK tour from September to November 1979. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is forever inscribed on Ian's memorial stone.
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" was first released as a single in June 1980 and became the band's first charting hit, reaching number 13 in the UK Singles Chart. That October, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" peaked at number 42 on the American dance chart. It also reached number 1 in New Zealand in June 1981 after Curtis' death.
"Ceremony" was one of the last Joy Division songs to be composed, with lyrics written by Ian Curtis. There are three recorded versions by Joy Division in existence.
After the death of Ian Curtis, the remaining members of Joy Division renamed the band New Order. Their first release was a re-recording of "Ceremony" as a stand-alone single backed with "In a Lonely Place", with guitarist Bernard Sumner taking over lead vocals. Sumner said that he had to put the "Ceremony" rehearsal tape as sung by Curtis through a graphic equalizer to transcribe the lyrics.
Arguably one of the best covers of "Ceremony", slowcore legends Galaxie 500 included the song as a bonus track on their 1997 CD Reissue of "On Fire"
In his book "Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division", Peter Hook reveals the sudden electronic crescendo at the end of "Isolation" came as the serendipitous result of Martin Hannett's efforts to rescue the original master tape from a botched edit by a junior sound engineer.

Bassist Peter Hook often spoke out on his original disappointment on the the final sound of Unknown Pleasures. "It definitely didn't turn out sounding the way I wanted it ... But now I can see that Martin did a good job on it ... There's no two ways about it, Martin Hannett created the Joy Division sound."
