Sinatra first performed the That's Life on his television special A Man and His Music – Part II in 1966, where it was played in the fashion of a blues song with the backing music played on an electronic organ.
T-Bone Burnett worked with actors Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon for their singing roles as Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash in the film Walk the Line. Witherspoon won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film, giving special thanks to Burnett in her speech for "helping her realize her lifelong dream of being a country music singer". He also produced that film's soundtrack album and wrote its score.

The song's title refers to an area historically known as Electric Avenue; a reference to the first place electricity lighted the streets in the market area of Brixton, South of London. This is an area known in the modern times for its high population of Caribbean immigrants and high unemployment. Tensions grew until violence hit the street now known as the 1981 Brixton riot. A year later, this song played over the airwaves.
On the inside of the original Rastaman Vibrations album jacket is a message stating "This album jacket is great for cleaning herb." The original jacket had divots in it which made its texture bumpy.
