Portishead's 'Dummy' was released on this day in 1994. The group came together in 1991 in Bristol. The name Portishead is taken from a town just eight miles away from Bristol, along the coast.
Before going solo, Sia got her start in various projects including an acid-jazz band called Crisp, backing vocals for Jamiroquai, and lead vocalist on Zero 7's first three records.
Originally Breaker Morant, the group changed their name as Explosions in the Sky in 1999. With three electric guitars and a drum kit, the group garners what they call "cathartic mini-symphonies" to describe their emotionally charged post-rock narratives.
Takk...(meaning "thanks" in Icelandic) is the fourth studio record from this Icelandic post-rock outfit released in September 2005. Unlike the previous album ( ), this record's lyrics are mostly in Icelandic rather than the group's made up language of Hopelandic. They will be in town at The Paramount Theatre on September 20th.

Starting in 1988, Massive Attack has carved out the genre of trip-hop: fusing electronics and drum-based breakdowns of hip-hop. 'Collected' was released in 2006 comprising the collective's singles up until 2006. The group has a full-length planned for later this year.

Heatmiser formed in Portland in October of 1991 consisting of Elliot Smith, Neil Gust, Brandt Peterson (replaced by Quasi frontman, Sam Coomes), and Tony Lash. The band broke up in the fall of 1996, prior to the release of their third and last album, 'Mic City Sons'.

In 2002, New York outfit Interpol unleashed their debut, 'Turn On the Bright Lights'. In an interview with Spin, the group reflected on the mindset of the band prior to their release, “We’d been playing around New York for a long time without getting anywhere. When we signed with Matador, we would’ve been thrilled with selling 10,000 copies. We just wanted someone to pay attention. We didn’t care why.”
Drive-By Truckers will be releasing 'American Band' at the end of September, a record reflecting on the upcoming election year. According to the Drive-By Truckers website, Patterson Hood states: "What It Means" is a song I wrote a couple of years ago protesting the Ferguson decision and the Trayvon Martin killing. Unfortunately, the song is still timely today. I hope and pray that one day it won't be." They will be playing the Showbox in Seattle on Thursday, September 29th.

Harrison wrote "Only a Northern Song" out of dissatisfaction with his status as a junior songwriter with the Beatles' publishing company, Northern Songs. The lyrics and music convey his grievances against the company such as, major shareholders profiting more from his compositions than he did.
The Verve wrote their second record, 'A Northern Soul' in a dark place...literally, according to frontman, Richard Ashcroft who told The Guardian, "Practicing in a dungeon in Wigan for this record, you're devoid of any kind of fashion, or thought of 'This is what we should be doing'. Like a band that goes into the studio and plays the music they hear in their heads rather than what they read in magazines."
On this day in 1983, Depeche Mode released their third studio album 'Construction Time Again'. This was the group's first record with new member, Alan Wilder who wrote two of the tracks including, "Two Minute Warning" and "The Landscape is Changing". "Everything Counts" addresses corporate greed and corruption, as the chorus sings of "grabbing hands" that "grab all they can".
