Thom Yorke brought this track to Radiohead almost completely formed-- he sat down and played the track on piano. The rest of the group then had to figure out how to accompany Yorke's central idea.
Maps is the moniker of UK musician James Chapman. This track comes from his debut record, We Can Create, which came out on Mute back in 2007. It was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize that year.
New project from the sublime Rachel Goswell (of the late, great Slowdive), along with members of Mogwai & Editors. The band's debut LP, Minor Victories, came out at the beginning of June.
2011 catharsis revisited. Remember that time Anthony Gonzalez wrote the soundtrack for that Tom Cruise movie about the spacemen garbage collector? He probably remembers the car he bought with the check more than the score at this point.
Watch this track with the visuals on Frank Ocean's website and it's an insane combo. Just gorgeous. One has to wonder if the band is directly referencing Godspeed You! Black Emperor with the songtitle: boysdontcry.co.

"Life takes you where it goes..." Leadoff track from the great local band Juno's debut album, This is the way it goes and goes and goes. Released on the DeSoto label, which was founded by members of Jawbox.
For those times when you want that Smashing Pumpkins feel, but without all that Billy. From the band's debut EP, which came out in 2005. The name, Pikul, stems from the nickname of a friend of the band who passed away.
New sophomore release from Michael Kiwanuka has received an awful lot of acclaim. Playing the Showbox on December 8th, which should be a quite good show. The new album from the 29-year-old musician is titled Love & Hate.
"I will be gone, but not forever." Music from the late, great Jason Molina, from the gorgeous Magnolia Electric Co. record. No summer vacation is complete without crying to this record in a car of some sort.
One of the Laura Veirs tracks off the gorgeous new case/lang/veirs record. She takes control of the record- her songwriting voice is really at the forefront. Their live show is pretty fun as well.
At long last, a Junior Meyvant full-length album has been released. Here's a set Junius played at Iceland Airwaves a few years ago: blog.kexp.org.
I wonder if Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johannson are still speaking. That'd be awkward if they weren't at this point. From the first Pete Yorn LP, musicforthemorningafter.
I maintain this should be used in a Mazda commercial of some sort. Their cars are just so fast! It's that Mazda guarantee. Released on Bjork's label One Little Indian Records.
I feel like I'm getting pampered every time this gets played. Less pampered when someone talks over it. Like, come on, Will Toledo's talking right now. He's 24, I guess, so he'll have plenty of time to enact revenge.
Sort of a transitional record for Beck. Finally getting over that Sea Change breakup, not quite back to the euphoric heights of Midnite Vultures, but nearing there? Someone should make a graph of that.
New record from everyone's favorite local suburb bros Naked Giants. Playing Bumershoot. Lead singer broke my best friend's heart, and I'm still mad. Watching U, Grant.
R.E.M. really enjoys doing typically daytime activities at night. It's one of their charming attributes. I wonder at what age Michael Stipe started growing out the latest incarnation of his beard.
Second single off the new Phantogram, following that one where they talk about drug dependence and desensitization. Now they're telling it how it is about how cruel this world can be.
Really cool track from Hooverphonic, from their 1996 record A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular. That was the Belgian band's debut record. I sort of want to live in "2Wicky."
I've heard this song is a great substitute for sex for teenage boys. I lived with this dude who would constantly try to explain Nine Inch Nails to me, which is a terribly irritating attribute.
Peter Bjorn and John will be playing at The Neptune on Wednesday, August 31 (next Wed). Stay tuned to win a pair of tickets throughout the morning! Giving several more away.
Playing The Showbox on October 8th. Which should be amazing. Oh, the untold hours I've spent smashing things in honor of Kathleen Hanna. Mostly smashing the patriarchy.
David Lowery really hates Spotify. One of the highlights of Lowery vs. Spotify: pitchfork.com.
Eno was responsible for Robert Fripp playing on the record-- he called the then-retired Fripp, and invited him to Berlin. Fripp recorded the guitar for "Beauty and the Beast" just after arriving in Berlin-- his first take was used in the final mix.
I remember when I was 16 I posted a snarky comment about Alt-J in the Stranger comments section. Something about how the lead singer sounds like a goat. I had reached maximum troll status.
Remember when Beastie Boys had women dancing in cages? It's cool they grew out of that. From the sophomore Beastie Boys release, Paul's Boutique, which received the KEXP breakdown treatment last summer.
Ronnie Laws's first record, Pressure Sensitive, was released on the rapidly declining Blue Note label back in 1975. Positive rating (4.5) from AllMusic, who later says the LP "can only be recommended in comparison to Ronnie Laws's later, more inferior recordings."
New De La Soul sounding good! The full-length will be released on Friday on Rough Trade, titled And the Anonymous Nobody. This is the second to last track on the record, titled "Here In After."
The new Frank Ocean has at long last been released after two years of hype. Turns out the joke was on us, because he's put out two records and they're both really good. Also at what point did he become the most beautiful man?
I was in this misc. Greek diner in Stuyvesant and London O'Connor was in front of me ordering take out. Didn't realize it was him until he had left. If I had been more sober I would've tried to interact. Such a good musician.
From Menomena's 2006 EP, titled Wet and Rusting. If the band had collaborated with the Talk Talk bassist, it would've been called Wet and Rustin (Man).
What's yr fave song on There's Nothing Wrong w/ Love? dj@kexp.org. I'd bet Doug Martsch's favorite is that moment of silence between "Twin Falls" and "Some."
LIVE at 12 PM on KEXP on August 30th. Also playing later that night at The Neptune Theater, which should be a good show. Stay tuned all morning for your chance to win tickets!
Where's Budgie at? A question for the hard times in life. From the 1988 Siouxsie Sioux record, titled Peepshow. Such weird vocal phrasing on this track. Hit No. 16 on the UK Charts.
New album from the Broken Social Scene member. Broken Social Scene are reportedly also working on a new record, which Feist will feature on. Canning's record, Home Wrecking Years, is out August 12.
Released on the pre-Loveless bankrupted Creation Records. This record got a 7.3 on P4k, which makes it 4 points better than the first Chastity Belt record. Great job all around, you guys.
Mass Gothic record came out on Sub Pop back towards the start of the year. Has some 80s pop vibes mixed with some synth-punk vibes, just pretty vibing all around.
Playing Neumos on November 2nd, along with Methyl Ethyl. Maybe they'll even play all 11.5 minutes of "Memory." That's a teaser for the new album by the way. I've been enjoying that first Women record as of late.
Can we get an update on Peter Murphy's current whereabouts? I would love to attach a GoPro to Murphy and just follow him around for a day through the live stream. Not in a creepy way, just think it'd be interesting.
Christgau's favorite band since the release of Strawberry. That's a good man to have on your side. Wussy have played several sets on KEXP this year-- here's the most recent one: www.youtube.com.
At long last, new record from Angel will be released on September 2nd. Couldn't be more excited. She just got written up on MTV, which is pretty wild: www.mtv.com.
I'm still waiting for Westerberg to name Kevin Cole the honorary Replacements guitarist, taking over for Bob Stinson. KC certainly has the chops. And his vegan lifestyle would be more conductive to touring than Stinson's formerly hard-drinking habits.
Do you think anyone told Morrissey how soon now was? Or what difference it made? Maybe that's why he's so damn grumpy. From the most produced of Smiths releases, titled Strangeaways, Here We Come.
New York based artist Mitski stopped by KEXP for a very heartfelt in-studio session. Stay posted to the blog for the release of her in-studio footage! kexp.org/blog
