Bassist Mike Mills recalled he was playing a piano riff at John Keane's studio in the band's hometown of Athens, Georgia. While Mills almost discarded the melody, it attracted the interest of singer Michael Stipe. Mills said, "I never thought it would amount to much because it was just a circular thing that kept going round and round and round. But it inspired Michael."
In the past, TV on the Radio have tried to undercut their more rockist ambitions with dissonant textures and queasy atmospherics, or lace their prettiest ballads with subversively ominous lyrics. But Nine Types of Light shows how TV on the Radio's transmissions can be just as effective and affecting when delivered free of static and noise. Psychocandy would go on to change the course of popular music, channeling the sneering angst and noise distortion of the live shows into hypnotic sweet melodies layered with dark lyrics that would beguile and bewilder.

Anthony Gonzalez on Raconte-Moi Une Histoire "When I was a kid, I had this cassette with someone telling these weird stories on it, and I was in love with it. My brother and I wrote the story for that song based on those cassettes. With that song, I wanted to start with something so ridiculous and basic and childish that then grows to something very touching and human. It's dangerous, but if you listen to it in the context of the album, it makes sense. There's always one song on my albums that people hate. I feel like that's going to be the case for this album, too. "
