Bron-Yr-Aur (Welsh for "hill of the gold") was a cottage used during the 1950s by vocalist Robert Plant's family as a holiday home. In 1970, Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page spent time there after a long tour of North America. Though the cottage had no running water or electricity, they used it as a retreat to write and record some of their third album, Led Zeppelin III.

American Wrestlers is the solo project of Gary McClure who moved from Scotland to St. Louis, MO to be with his significant other. McClure then purchased an eight-track Tascam recorder and a bass guitar at a local pawn shop and recorded American Wrestlers at his new home. Regarding the album's lo-fi recording process, McClure noted, "The last time I recorded on like a 4-track or an 8-track was when I was like thirteen/fourteen in my bedroom, and this is the first thing I've recorded on 8-tracks since then

“The album was named in Cincinnati, which is especially fitting,” frontman Greg Dulli says. “I was recording a beatbox track for the song ‘Matamoros,’ and my friend Manuel Agnelli (of Italian rock band Afterhours) was in the control room. After I finished, he said it sounded like I was singing ‘Do to the beast what you do to the bush.’ And I thought, ‘Brother, you just named the record.’”

Mason described this record as ‘an album where each song is a separate entity, where there is no great narrative running through it.’

In an interview with The Skinny (UK), frontman Scott Munro elaborated on the darkness of 'Preoccupations' content: “I feel like the lyrics are even darker in places,” says Munro. “Matt and I both had long-term relationships break down over the course of the last year, and that definitely played into the record. It’s definitely been a transitional period of my life, and I’m sure that’s affected the music. Like I said, we didn’t really live anywhere last year, and it forced us to throw everything we had into becoming a full-time band. That’s daunting, but it also made me realise that I’m probably happier when I’m not tied to too many things.”

French/Finish duo, The Do released, 'Shake Shook Shaken' last year and with a unique approach...“When we started writing these songs,” they said, “we used only a laptop and a keyboard. We quickly became obsessed with this set-up; this form of minimalism banning ‘real’ instruments to the point of creating a new work ethic: guitars, which had been almost over-used previously, have intentionally been set aside. Our aim with ‘Shake, Shook, Shaken’ was to take ownership of the sounds that had previously been undervalued, while going with a more pop aesthetic.”
