The lyrics of "Avalanche" are based on a poem Cohen had previously written. He mentioned in a 1992 interview with Paul Zollo that his "chop", his unique syncopated classical guitar pattern is behind many of his early songs including this track. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds also recorded a version of "Avalanche" for their 1984 album From Her to Eternity.
