Bob Marley may have written the melody of "No Woman, No Cry" but songwriter credits were given to Vincent Ford, a friend of Marley's who ran a soup kitchen in Trenchtown, the ghetto of Kingston, Jamaica where Marley grew up. The royalty payments received by Ford ensured the survival and continual running of his soup kitchen.

Its basic tracks were recorded live at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on January 26, 1987, with additional overdubs and corrections recorded at The Edge Studio in Los Angeles. "Lawn Chair Larry" who desperately wanted to fly (but due to bad eyesight, couldn't get his license) so he attached weather balloons to his chair and brought a pellet gun with him to shoot the balloons when he needed to hasten his descent. He'd hoped to rise 100 feet, but instead soared to about 16,000 feet, which quickly attracted the attention of the authorities. He was able to shoot himself down, but he landed on a power line, causing a 20-minute blackout in a Long Beach neighborhood.
