Singer Star Kendrick says “This song went through a geographical & creative metamorphosis over almost two years. We originally wrote it in Copenhagen, demoed it in Stockholm and then revisited it recently when Toma & I were both in London. I guess the song speaks for itself but ultimately it falls in the good ol’ “wanting-something-that-ain’t-good-for-you” vein …”
In an interview with Jezebel, the singer explained the song's meaning: "Sometimes as a songwriter and a human, I feel very restricted by words. One word can have so much social implication, standard, limitation, qualification that it doesn't give a person their own opportunity to really choose their identity. I wrote 'Woman Is A Word' at a time when I felt like the word 'woman' put me in a box of things I was capable to do, things that defined me that didn't necessarily define me."

Kristin Kontrol, the solo project of Dum Dum Girls bandleader Dee Dee (a.k.a. Kristin Welchez), just released this B-side single. It's from the recording sessions for her 'X-Communicate' album which was released May 2016. Regarding this song, she says “I really regret not including it on the album. It was super fun to make—Kurt Feldman and I let loose on the production, trying to pin down that nebulous aggression from Evil Heat-era Primal Scream, but let it cork off the party at the end."

From Wikepedia - The song is based upon an electronic drum beat by Stephen Morris, accompanied by a high-pitched keyboard line by Bernard Sumner. Midway through the song, a rushing drum and hi-hat motif come in, propelling the song toward its dramatic end. Joy Division Bassist Peter Hook said the ending came as the result of Martin Hannett's efforts to rescue the original master tape from a botched edit by a junior sound engineer.
Happy 61st birthday to Mr Bernard Sumner.
