The origin of the Horses album lies in the inception of a poem Patti Smith wrote called "Oath" when she was around 20. It began, "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine." She explained to Mojo magazine: "It was my statement of independence from being fettered by any particular religious institution, not any statement against Jesus Christ. That's the start of my evolution as a young person that got me to Horses."

So who is "Ray"? Lead singer Evan Dando explained to Melody Maker: "It comes from this guy in Melbourne, Australia, who calls everyone Ray. So I started to think that Ray could be a name for everybody, so 'It's A Shame About Ray' could be about anybody. It's a pretty grey and indefinite kinda thing, but then it's very specific. It's a little puzzler for me, too. I'm not sure if the person singing the song is Ray himself, or someone who knew him. It's hard to know."

There was a Jewish holocaust, but there's a black holocaust that people still choose to ignore."

Roger Waters wrote this about Mary Whitehouse, a British woman who led a movement to keep sex off TV. He felt Whitehouse had no right to decide what other people should watch. Along with dogs and sheep, pigs are one of 3 animals represented on the album. The pigs represent people, like Whitehouse, who feel they are the moral authorities. The sheep are the people who obey the pigs and believe that it is the "Christian" thing to do and are just your normal, hard working innocent bystanders. Dogs are people who are against the pigs and are back stabbers.

Just a few years earlier, Tipper Gore was incensed when she heard the sexually explicit lyrics of Prince's "Darling Nikki" floating out of her young daughter's bedroom. Shortly after, she co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center on a mission to help parents keep tabs on inappropriate material "unsuitable for minors". In N.W.A's case, violence was the biggest offender in songs like this one and "Fuck tha Police"
