"The Police were formed in 1977 by drummer Stewart Copeland, along with schoolteacher Gordon "Sting" Sumner and guitarist Andy Summers. Within a year, they were rock's next big thing, but tensions began bubbling over as Sting took control of the band. The others began to feel like his employees and they began fighting like crazy, even as the band got bigger and bigger." Read more about this band's messy breakup: www.rollingstone.com

This song is about a scientist who falls in love with his lab assistant. Dolby said that it's "probably about the most frivolous song that I've ever written," but he still loves it. "When I play it now, I still get a big kick out of it. I mean, I'm perfectly proud of the song, and it's got a great groove and loaded with hooks. And when I play, it's iconic, I think, for many people. Especially people who were around the first time. It makes people very happy," said Dolby. He adds, "I have no regrets over that because I think that it provided a sort of starting point for people to get into the more serious, more personal aspects my music."

""Pepper" recounts, in a sort of dream-like fashion, the old Texas punk scene Gibby Haynes experienced while still a fresh-faced college kid. The names in the song are of real people: Chit Cherie; Bobby Soxx, and others are all mused upon. It was sort of a nostalgia for the simpler days of old, before the Butthole Surfers got bogged down with the regimented, and litigious days of being major label denizens." The horns were real musicians, not samples - something very uncommon in hip-hop at the time. Producer Rick Rubin didn't chart out the horn parts - he told the musicians what to play and let them have at it. They ended up incorporating a sax solo into the song.

Bono used to introduce this at concerts by saying: "This is not a rebel song." There are two Bloody Sundays in Irish history. The first was in 1920 when British troops fired into the crowd at a football match in Dublin in retaliation for the killing of British undercover agents. The second was on January 30, 1972, when British paratroopers killed 13 Irish citizens at a civil rights protest in Derry, Northern Ireland. : www.huffingtonpost.com

Originally titled "KW1" (for "that Kraftwerk one," and the German synth explorers' influence is certainly highly felt), "Your Silent Face" is one of the key tracks on New Order's "Power, Corruption and Lies." Musically, it's austere and gloriously chilly, a wash of synthesizers over electronic drums (Peter Hook's bassline doesn't even show up until the song is half over, and even then, it bows out after about 24 bars) with a melodica-like instrument wheezing out a hooky arpeggiated riff every so often.: www.allmusic.com
