Despite being far more complex and introverted, Foals‘ second album, Total Life Forever, was easily a favorite of many KEXP DJs and listeners last year. (In fact, it landed on all three daytime DJs’ top ten lists of 2010!) Foals performed a mostly acoustic in-studio set with versions of “Spanish Sahara” and “2 Trees” from the new album and decided to end their short but intense set with a cover of Angels of Light’s “Public Embarrassment Blues” (from the 2001 album, How I Loved You). The final chord is all four Beatles and George Martin banging on three pianos simultaneously. As the sound diminished, the engineer boosted it. The resulting note lasts 42 seconds, and the studio air conditioners can be heard toward the end as the faders were pushed to the limit to record it.

From the band:" Influenced by classical, ambient, and Japanese tonkori music, whose meditative quality aided her father’s recovery, Elizabeth stands as the patient-zero case study for Life After Youth’s therapeutic powers. These are the songs that got her through the tough times. And now, they can do the same for you."

I'd have to agree with Stereogum: "Compared to the wizened post-blues that Lanegan usually makes these days, this one is a relatively straightforward riff-rocker, one with a huge melody that recalls Lanegan’s Screaming Trees days. It’s also a grand and catchy and anthemic rock song, the type they don’t make very often anymore. I very much recommend clicking play" . www.stereogum.com

This version was used in a tv commercial which featured technicolor rubber balls bouncing down hilly San Francisco streets. They closed off an entire San Francisco block for two days while earth-moving equipment and compressed-air cannons shot the 250,000 balls down the street. The film crew had just one opportunity to get it right. No computer graphics were used.

Otis Redding wrote this and originally recorded it in 1965, with his version hitting #35 in the US. Redding said of the song shortly before his death in 1967: "That's one of my favorite songs because it has a better groove than any of my records. It says something, too: 'What you want, baby, you got it; what you need, baby, you got it; all I'm asking for is a little respect when I come home.' The song lines are great. The band track is beautiful. It took me a whole day to write it and about twenty minutes to arrange it. We cut it once and that was it. Everybody wants respect, you know."

In the album's liner notes, Gaye explained his views on the themes of sex and love, stating "I can't see anything wrong with sex between consenting anybodies. I think we make far too much of it. After all, one's genitals are just one important part of the magnificent human body ... I contend that SEX IS SEX and LOVE IS LOVE. When combined, they work well together, if two people are of about the same mind. But they are really two discrete needs and should be treated as such. Time and space will not permit me to expound further, especially in the area of the psyche. I don't believe in overly moralistic philosophies. Have your sex, it can be exciting, if you're lucky. I hope the music that I present here makes you lucky."

The title comes from the name of a cabaret singer/vice queen from the 1950s and '60s who attracted controversy from being involved in the payola Radio One scandal in the 1960s in a "sex for airplay" scenario. Her other scandals included attending the premiere of a film in 1964 in a topless dress, and being arrested and jailed in 1973 for not just the Payola scandal but also for running a brothel and perverting the course of justice by threatening witnesses.

The band realized that the song had drawn in many casual fans who did not care about the rest of the group's material; thus the band began to play the song "early in the set, so that the people who didn't like us could leave, and we could play for the people who cared. That worked out well. People did leave."

The Dead Milkmen existed on paper before they were ever a live act. The band are well known for their sly humor and, fittingly, started out as something of a joke. Founder Joe Genaro was writing a parody of fan club letters of popular bands, finding the style and tone of them ludicrous and over the top. He invented 'The Dead Milkmen' as a fictitious band for the satirical newsletter to revolve around. This spur-of-the-moment creation inspired Joe and the other members to actually form the band.
