In an interview, singer Elena Tonra talks about "Smother". She sings, "I’m sorry if I smothered you / I sometimes wish I'd stayed inside my mother, never to come out." "My mum found it very hard to deal with the fact that I'd said that, I had to explain to her, and say, 'I really am sorry. But I had to write it, and I wrote it, and I can't take it back, and that's how it is now.'"
Van Etten self-produced "Are We There" with Stewart Lerman, with the guidance of bandmate Zeke Hutchins. Most of the recording was done at Hobo Sound Studios in Weehawken, New Jersey, with piano tracks being recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City.

He found the inspiration to compose the song from his experiences with an unidentified woman; speaking to Billboard, he explained: "I was involved with this really, really wonderful woman, and I loved her very much. But I knew deep in my heart of hearts that we had no business being romantically involved. So, it's sort of about being in love with someone but knowing you shouldn't be with them."

SOAK aka 18 year old Bridie Monds-Watson tells Noisey of when her music career collided with her schooling: “After my regular school I went to a special music school,” she remembers over the phone, “But it was around the time when I just started to do a lot of shows in other places, and it became hard for the teachers to make sure I was getting stuff done… so they asked me to leave.”

Vagabon aka Laetitia Tamko is a multi-instrumentalist and a producer, recording since 2014 as Vagabon. The album’s title references a book of poetry by Dana Ward called The Crisis of Infinite Worlds, a book Tamko found particularly inspiring during her recording process, but also very challenging to read: “I had to think critically while reading Dana Ward, it was exciting to be challenged in that way. While I was writing the album, it was a lot of me thinking critically about how to actualize my ideas, and the challenge of reaching proficiency in new instruments. It sort of mirrored my experience reading Dana Ward’s book. I found myself combing his writing over and over and over until I grabbed something from it.”
