This was originally written and recorded by Leonard Cohen in 1984. Leonard Cohen explained, "Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means 'Glory to the Lord.' The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist. I say: All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value. It's a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion."
Elbow's lead singer Guy Garvey explained about 'My Sad Captains': "It mourns the fact you can't see all your friends every night like you can when you're young. ... "There's a line in it - 'we only come this way but once' - which is actually a bastardisation of William Penn (founder of Pennsylvania). He was talking about realizing you only have one life, realizing your own mortality." Elbow will be at the Showbox on November 10th.

Stone Roses' lead singer Ian Brown has said that the song is about sin, how individuals want to be idolized, and how we would do anything to attain that goal. In a 2009 interview he explained further that he "didn't actually want people to adore me. I was trying to say then, if you want to be adored, it's like a sin, like lust or gluttony or something like that."
Liam Gallagher has said this is his favorite Oasis song. "I think the words still mean something powerful. You talk about Oasis capturing a spirit, and I think that song is how a lot of people feel when they're down on their luck. I think I first heard it in the Boardwalk in Manchester when our kid (Noel Gallagher) was trying it out. Even when we're starting it now I always feel like we're going to perform our best version of it. It makes me think of me mam. And it's the song that makes me feel I have the best job in the band. I may not have written it but I get to sing it. It's weird cos it's outlasted other tunes."

Bassist John Taylor, is a huge Bond fan. An Aston Martin was said to be one of his first "rock star" purchases, and he frequently mentioned his Bond video collection in interviews.
This includes the exchange between Bond and Auric Goldfinger... "Do you expect me to talk?" "No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die."
Paul McCartney recalled the writing of the song in an interview: "I got the book and it's a very fast read. On the Sunday, I sat down and thought, OK, the hardest thing to do here is to work in that title. I mean, later I really pitied who had the job of writing Quantum Of Solace. So I thought, Live And Let Die, OK, really what they mean is live and let live and there's the switch.
So I came at it from the very obvious angle. I just thought, 'When you were younger you used to say that, but now you say this.'"

According to Bernard Sumner, the lyrics were changed at the last minute to sanitize the lines "When I was a very small boy, very small boys talked to me, now that we've grown up together, they're all taking drugs with me" to "they're afraid of what they see," at the suggestion of producer Steven Hague, who felt the song had more hit potential without the drug reference. Sumner would sometimes sing this original lyric during live performances.
"Children of the Revolution" was first recorded at Ascot Sound Studios for the film Born to Boogie, and featured Elton John on piano and Ringo Starr on a second drum kit.

The main musical theme was sampled from "Golden Girl," an instrumental composed by John Barry for the 1964 James Bond movie Goldfinger. The Sneaker Pimps will be on a short US tour later this year but no Seattle. Looks like L.A. is the closest.
