Robert "3D" del Naja discussed Horace Andy's contribution to this track: "Some people have said in reviews, 'Oh, this is classic Massive and Horace doing what Horace does.' And I've thought, 'well actually that's not quite right', because, with Horace, you've got to understand the depth of the man. He's really coming from this kind of reggae, lovers' rock, Studio One type of background and we've taken him out of that and got him to do completely different things with us. Horace would love us to do lovers' rock. He goes back to Jamaica and his old-skool sparring partners over there are like, 'what is that weird white-man music you've been making with those boys in Bristol again...?'. They don't really understand that shit at all. And Horace is like, 'why don't you make me a hit single, so I can have a big hit in America like Shaggy?'. And we're like, 'shut up Horace, we've done this minimal tune'. But he loved the results. It's fun working with him."

The "P" in the track "Friends of P." has had multiple theories presented as to its meaning. According to wikipedia, which is never wrong, the actual "P" in the song refers to Paulina Porizkova, the wife of The Cars guitarist Ric Ocasek, who produced the first Weezer album, known as The Blue Album. Paulina made a claim that no one had ever written a song about her, and so Sharp took on the task. Ocasek noted that he found the subject matter of the song a bit odd.

Murphy explained the inspiration for the song to ieallylovemusic.co.uk: "When I was DJing, playing Can, Liquid Liquid, ESG, all that kind of stuff, I became kind of cool for a moment, which was a total anomaly. And when I heard other DJs playing similar music I was like: 'Fuck! I'm out of a job! These are my records!' But it was like someone had crept into my brain and said all these words that I hate. Did I make the records? Did I fuck! So, I started becoming horrified by my own attitude. I had this moment of glory though. People would use me to DJ just to get them cool. They'd be like 'It's the cool rock disco guy' and this was really weird. And to be honest I was afraid that this new found coolness was going to go away and that's where 'Losing My Edge' comes from. It is about being horrified by my own silliness. And then it became a wider thing about people who grip onto other people's creations like they are their own. There is a lot of pathos in that character though because it's born out of inadequacy and love."
