The French WW2 Resistance's struggle against the occupying forces was historically recorded in two surviving historical songs: “Chante des partisans” and “La complainte du partisan.” Cohen had heard the latter on Canadian BBC radio – although in translation. The original was a poem written during the occupation by an FFF (Free French Forces) soldier named Emmanuel D’Astier de la Vigerie, and put to music by the singer Anna Marly. It was then translated into English by Hy Zaret – then famous for having written the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody.” Cohen then recorded the song for 1969’s Songs From a Room. "In a chat with Pitchfork.tv, the great Australian indie rocker Courtney Barnett called out the Boys Next Door/the Birthday Party’s 1979 classic “Shivers” as one of her favorite songs. “I think when I started listening to Nick Cave and then started researching all the other bands [he was in], I really loved that song ‘Shivers’ that the Birthday Party did,” Barnett said while discussing another song by Boys Next Door guitarist Rowland S. Howard. “And then I found out that Rowland S. Howard wrote it. And then there’s the version of it in Dogs In Space, and I just think that’s such a great song.”" www.stereogum.com

According to Thom Yorke, this is a song about an area in east London called Canary Wharf, which was built on unused wasteland by the docks of the Thames. The area was supposed to be a major business district, but it was hurt by a market downturn in the '90s. Canary Wharf was landscaped with a lot of artificial plants, which is where the title came from. This version is from their Glastonbury performance on the 23rd. If you missed the link earlier you can hear the entire set here: www.bbc.co.uk

From their website: "The brainchild of Amelia Murray, Fazerdaze began as a string of bedroom recordings created late in the night, emerging fully-formed in 2014 as her debut eponymous EP. A succinct collection of intimate, beautifully produced dream-pop written, produced and performed by Murray herself. It’s a significant first outing for the young New Zealander with layers of softly crunching guitars swirling over consistently driving drum machines, and sparse electronica."

There are two different music videos for this song. The video in the United States was an avant-garde tribute to its lyrics (e.g. when Collins sings the lyrics "you made me acknowledge the devil in me", a child's painting of the devil is overlaid over his face). The international video shows Collins singing over videos, and silhouettes of dancers.

Legend has it, Quentin Tarantino found a used copy of alt rockers Urge Overkill's 1992 Stull EP while crate digging in England and became smitten with its lead track, a cover of Neil Diamond's 1967 single "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon." The director has gone so far as to say the alt-rockers' version is "even better" than Diamond's. That's a bold statement. www.rollingstone.com
