Recorded under the working title 'Countdown to Armageddon', the group ultimately decided on 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back' a line from their first album's song "Raise the Roof". The material was recorded in 30 days for an estimated $25,000 in recording costs and the album was completed in six weeks.

Dave Rosser, Afghan Whigs guitarist and Gutter Twins member has passed away at the age of 50 following a battle with inoperable colon cancer. He also served as composer and guitarist on albums by Ani DiFranco, Joseph Arthur and Tim Heidecker. "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our friend, brother and inspiration," the band wrote on Facebook. "Dave Rosser passed away peacefully last evening surrounded by love. Thank you to all who kept him in their hearts. He is forever in ours."
