Speaking with Interview Magazine, Hilmarsdóttir explained the song's meaning: "How we usually make our lyrics is, Raggi and I, sometimes we come up with stories or situations. That one is about a relationship. Sometimes we haven't wanted to give too much away. We like people to read their own things in the lyrics. I guess I could share it. It's about a couple and the husband passed away and it's from the conversation between the two of them. We don't know if she's going crazy or if someone's actually there. We've kind of been inspired by people that lived in my house. This old couple that lived there for 30 years. The woman passed away, so it was kind of different."
This song is about Pompeii, buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

In a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Moby recalled this track: "This still makes me laugh. I recorded a rushed demo to cassette. I could never mix it in a way I was happy with, so I just ended up using the cassette demo on the album. If you listen to it, there's hiss, there's tape warble. It's probably one of the only songs on a 10-million-selling record recorded to cassette. And what's funny is that it's been licensed. Oliver Stone used it in a movie, it's been in a couple really big movies. And every time I hear it in a huge movie, I think to myself, This is just a crummy demo on cassette."
On January 30, 2015, surviving Mad Season members Mike McCready and Barrett Martin performed selections from the band's repertoire at the Seattle Symphony's Sonic Evolution concert, with conductor Ludovic Morlot and guest artists including Soundgarden's Chris Cornell (filling in for the late Layne Staley), Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron and Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan (filling in for the late John Baker Saunders). "Nick Cave has made a long and bountiful career of cataloging mankind's depravities, and how greatly these deeds contrast with our declared pious objectives. But moderation has never been Cave's strength, so when he opens fire with the immoderate double barrels of Abattoir Blues and The Lyre of Orpheus, it appears that he intends to fight audacity with audacity."
