In honor of National Radio Week, we're focusing this morning on Indie 103.1 in L.A. "We Want the Airwaves" was the first song played on this station that made its debut on Christmas night in 2003, launched with just three employees
The second song played on Indie 103.1 in L.A., which for their first month after debuting in 2003 featured angry messages from folks yelling, "You guys suck!" and "What happened to KDL the party station?!"

Mark Sovel was a DJ, music director and producer for one of the coolest stations in the history of commercial radio, Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles. He was the music director from the day the station went on the air, and built it from the ground up.

On February 10, 2004 at noon, the first live DJ appeared on Indie 103.1. The DJ was Steve Jones (guitarist, songwriter and founding member of The Sex Pistols). Jonesy's Jukebox become famous for its free-form music and Jones' unorthodox delivery style which included long pauses, belches and the frequent whistling of songs. Jonesys' producer (Indie 103.1 Music Director Mark Sovel) was dubbed "Mr. Shovel" by Jones and became a comic foil for Jones.
We’re focusing on L.A.'s Indie 103.1 this morning with the help of the station’s music director, Mark “Mr. Shovel” Sovel, a name coined by station DJ and Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. The Los Angeles based station had a hand in exposing great local artists like Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and other bands before they signed to major labels.

Henry Rollins had been filling in for awhile at Indie 103.1 when the station announced that in 2005 it would be hosting a Sunday night show with Rollins entitled, Harmony in My Head
Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles was great because of DJs who chose their own music like Rob Zombie, the Crystal Method, Dave Navarro and, of course, Henry Rollins.

Today for National Radio Week, we’re focusing on Indie 103.1 with the help of the station’s music director, Mark “Mr. Shovel” Sovel. After helping to launch Indie 103.1 and being a vital part of its entire journey on the air, Sovel has since moved on to other projects.
Unfortunately, and without warning, on the morning of Thursday, January 15, 2009, the corporation that owned Indie 103.1 (Entravision) shut it down due to the stock crash of 2008, advertising drying up, and budget cuts. "If you think what I am going to tell you is odd, it’s not. It’s the norm in commercial radio."
