Good morning and happy Friday. The title of this song comes from Zoo Bahnhof, a train station in Berlin where the underground portion of the U2 line begins. Officially called Zoologischer Garten, the station is the stop for the Berlin Zoo. The band went to the Berlin Zoo after arriving in Berlin to record "Achtung Baby." Bono got the idea there to use the zoo as a theme. The zoo image would reappear on their next album, "Zooropa," and the subsequent Zoo TV tour.
The "Barbara, Barbara We Face a Shining Future" album title was something that Rick Smith's late father said to his mother not long before he passed away. Karl Hyde told Billboard magazine: "His father was a great man, very inspiring and as soon Rick said that, before we got halfway through writing this material, it was just instant, 'Yeah, that's the title.'"

Band leader Tanya Donnely, who had played with her stepsister Kristin Hersh in Throwing Muses (the short-lived Rhode Island invasion of the '90s) and in The Breeders, was quoted in The Illinois Entertainer as saying this song was about commitment and respect. The metaphor is the tree that would be planted on large farms as a point of reference to getting around (the only tree sometimes). The famous drum performance was recorded by engineer Andy Johns by placing John Bonham and a new Ludwig drum kit at the bottom of a stairwell at Headley Grange, and recording it using two Beyerdynamic M160 microphones at the top, giving the distinctive resonant but slightly muffled sound.
