Gish was recorded from December 1990 to March 1991 in Butch Vig's Smart Studios. Vig and Billy Corgan worked together as co-producers. The longer recording period and larger budget were unprecedented for Vig, who later remembered,
(Corgan) wanted to make everything sound amazing and see how far he could take it; really spend time on the production and the performances. For me that was a godsend because I was used to doing records for all the indie labels and we only had budgets for three or four days. Having that luxury to spend hours on a guitar tone or tuning the drums or working on harmonies and textural things ... I was over the moon to think I had found a comrade-in-arms who wanted to push me, and who really wanted me to push him.

Formed at Haverstock School in Chalk Farm, London in 1998, South were originally conceived as an electronic act. The band were mentored by ex-Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown and later worked under the tutelage of UNKLE's James Lavelle, who signed them to his personal record label.

Mojo magazine May 2013 asked Kim Deal if she had a sense this song would be a hit. She replied: "Did we record a song that opened with me saying, 'Check 1-2,' and then loads of vocal feedback from my brother's harmonica mike, and think, 'This is destined for radio?' That was the sort of thing that didn't get you played on the radio then. We thought no one would play it."

Casper Skulls, a Toronto band weaving an unpredictable orbit around post-punk, will release its debut album Mercy Works on November 3. The first single's title, "You Can Call Me Allocator" is a play on '(You Can) Call Me Al' by Paul Simon and the song was specifically inspired by the lines 'Where's my wife and family? What if I die here? Who'll be my role model?'.

Without any warning, Superchunk dropped the new single “Break The Glass,” a righteous and incensed pop-punk jam from one of the bands who perfected the form of righteous and incensed pop-punk jams. And as its B-side, they’ve given us a fired-up cover of “Mad World,” a 1985 hardcore anthem from the Raleigh crossover-thrash greats Corrosion Of Conformity. After recording a 12" of "Sunshine Smile" that was to be released on the 'Money To Burn' label, the band received a positive review in the NME. However, the single was never released. They signed to Creation Records in 1992, and after a UK tour supporting Curve, they released their first single, a re-recording of "Sunshine Smile", in April of that year.

Joey was an avid online stock trader in the late '90s. He was a big fan of cable network CNBC, and wrote a song named after his favorite anchor, Maria Bartiromo. There were plans to have him sing it on her show, but he never recovered from his cancer.

During an April 2004 interview with Josh Modell of AVclub.com, Isaac Brock revealed that after a long night of drinking he returned to the apartment he was staying in while recording The Moon & Antarctica. He stepped outside to smoke a cigarette to find a group of 14 kids hanging around on the sidewalk. Being what he called a "friendly drunk guy," he decided to say hello, but before he could get the words out of his mouth, one of the kids punched him in the face, breaking his jaw. The random attack continued with the kids chasing the band's dog and continuing to punch Brock. This forced the band to cut back on Brock's vocals during recording of the 2000 album.

The attempt started in Memphis, Tennessee on the afternoon of June 27 when the rock band boarded their bus, aptly named Endeavor, to zigzag across the region. Their marathon ended in New Orleans on the afternoon of June 28, with 20 minutes to spare.

Written by Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher, both vocalists and guitarists for My Bloody Valentine, this is the album opener and second single from Loveless. The track is known for what Shields calls the "glide guitar" technique, which he explained in a 1992 Guitar World interview as "just two amps facing each other, with tremolo. And the tremolo on each amp is set to a different rate. There's a mic between the two amps. I did a couple of overdubs of that, then I reversed it and played it backwards into a sampler. I put them on top of each other so they kind of merged in."

Looking in particular for a female singer who could make their dissonant music more poppy, they auditioned Shirley Manson after watching a video for her band Angelfish's 1993 debut single "Suffocate Me." Manson described the audition and early jam session as "a disaster," but still she was invited to join Garbage.
