Celebrating the life of singer Charles Bradley on what would have been his 69th birthday. Charles' sister took him to see James Brown's historic 1962 performance at The Apollo Theater. He was 14, sometimes homeless, yet that show changed his life.
While living in Bar Harbor Maine learning to be a cook, Charles discovered he could mimic James Brown with great accuracy. He dubbed himself "Black Velvet," began singing and never looked back.
Written with friend and collaborator Thomas Brenneck to channel the pain of losing his brother. This morning we celebrate the extraordinary life of Mr. Charles Bradley, who would have turned 69 yesterday.
You Put the Flame on It is from Charles' second album Victim of Love. The Boston Globe said "You hear him at the peak of his powers...Bradley tells his story, one wounded sentiment at a time."
