"I Wanna Be Adored" is the first cut from their debut album. The song was meant as an honest apology to their Manchester fans (who had been with them from the start) for the band signing a lucrative record deal.

After the band's previous album 'Led Zeppelin III' received lukewarm reviews from critics, Jimmy Page decided their fourth album would officially be untitled. This, along with the inner sleeve's design featuring four symbols that represented each band member, led to the album being referred to variously as The Four Symbols logo, Four Symbols, The Fourth Album, Untitled, Runes, The Hermit, and ZoSo (which was derived from Page's symbol). In addition to lacking an album title, the cover featured no band name, as the group wished to be anonymous and to avoid easy pigeonholing by the press. It went on to be, at the time, the 3rd best selling album in the USA.

He had dismissed "Porcelain" as "average" and later recalled that he "couldn't imagine anyone else wanting to listen to it" – however, he was eventually talked into including it on 'Play'. It was released as the 6th single from the album and turned into the biggest hit from the album.

When released as a single in late 1975, the song became the band's first worldwide hit. According to Jeff Lynne this song was the quickest he had ever written, in thirty minutes, originally as 'filler' for the group's Face the Music album. Christ, imagine how good this song would be if he'd just put in one more minute - slacker!
