The song is about what potential lies in the earliest part of the day. "There's life in this early morning/ A life that you want to lead," sing James Roberts and Ebony Hoorn, and they're not kidding. Get up early and you could see the sun rise, get some exercise in, or actually create something. "But if you're not ready, forget it," they sing, telling you just to go back to sleep.: www.youtube.com

“Never Let Me Down Again” was more than just another single from Music for the Masses. Unbeknownst to most fans, this song was so monumental that it would change the course of Depeche Mode’s history. Before “Never Let Me Down Again,” Depeche Mode was known primarily as an Electro-Pop/New Wave hits like “Just Can’t Get Enough.” It wasn’t until 1987’s Music for the Masses, specifically “Never Let Me Down Again” that Depeche Mode began incorporating a more stadium rock sound which would eventually culminate with the success of 1990’s “Personal Jesus” and Violator.: dontforgetthesongs365.wordpress.com

This song, in which Thom Yorke vented his ambivalent feelings towards authority figures, was created when Radiohead were still known as Early On A Friday. According to Q magazine, it was hearing Early On A Friday perform this song that persuaded Bryce Edge and Chris Hufford that the band were worth managing. Edge and Hufford have continued to manage Yorke and company since those early days.: www.youtube.com

Frontman Guy Garvey (From Uncut magazine February 2008): "'Grounds For Divorce' was written when I was in a unhappy relationship. The words tumbled onto the page before I'd considered their meaning: 'I've been working on a cocktail called Grounds For Divorce.' It relates to the relationship I was in, but it's also a light-hearted look at the aftermath of losing my friend (singer songwriter Bryan Clancy who died in 2006), about wanting to get out of my beloved Manchester. I wanted to live somewhere else, just because of how heavy it got round here."

The band would sometimes end their shows with this song, at times without being onstage. During the last few minutes of the song, an unmanned sequencer and drum machine could play out the song while the band departed, leaving the crowd staring at the instruments. Eschewing (That means, "abstaining from...") an encore, the band would disappear, leaving the audience to wonder what happened.

The Chemical Brothers' Tom Rowlands recalled to Q magazine: "I went to Q-Tip's house in New Jersey to do 'Go.' It's brilliant, proper teenage b-boy fantasy stuff. He's got an incredible studio in the basement with special sub-bass in every corner, and the most amazing vinyl collection -four copies of obscure Krautrock records, stuff like that. Then we ordered jerk chicken. I was in awe."

This was originally recorded by a British group called The Arrows in 1975, and it was written by their lead singer Alan Merrill and guitarist Jake Hooker. Joan Jett was touring England as a member of an all teenage girl group called The Runaways when she discovered this song. She wanted to record it with The Runaways, but the other members didn't like the song and made the mistake of passing it up. So, in 1979, Jett recorded it with Paul Cook and Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols and released it as a B-side. Finally, in 1981, Jett recorded the song with her band The Blackhearts, resulting in a monster hit.

According to NME magazine (3/16/91), we know that Paul Simonon smashed his bass guitar - as photographed on the cover of the album - at exactly 10:50 pm. This is because he broke his watch in the process and handed the busted bits to photographer Pennie Smith. Smith thought the photo wouldn't be good for an album cover, citing that it was too blurry and out of focus. "I was wrong!" she admitted in the Westway to the World documentary!
