"Wonderwall" — this album's oft-quoted breakout hit — was actually written for Noel Gallagher's girlfriend at the time, and later his wife, Meg Matthews. She was out of work, and he wanted her to know how important she was to him. For Matthews, having a famous song written about her was a bit odd. "You can't go up to someone and say, 'Hi, I'm Wonderwall,'" Matthews, who later would marry and then divorce Gallagher, told The Sunday Times in February, 1996.

"You are about to witness the strength of street knowledge..." Complex said of this song, "In two bars, Ice Cube gave you the setting and the character, and conveyed it with the visceral directness that would become a mark of gangster rap from that point on. Since this time, every gangster rap record is a variation on these two immortal themes: a violent setting and an unreliable, even psychotic, narrator."

Pete Fijalkowski says of this song, "This was written pre-Adorable when we were called the Candy Thieves, which I had formed in 1988 with my friend Wayne Peters on guitar, when we were on a Film Studies course together at Warwick University. I can still remember the day we wrote it. Wil started playing the bass line, and Kevin joined in on the floor tom. I sang a whole load of lines culled from other discarded songs, Wayne picked some notes, and then when it felt right I stepped on my distortion pedal to make it start feeding back, Kevin sensed it was time to move onto the snare and we all crashed in – it was beautiful. Afterwards we danced around high on adrenaline, absolutely convinced we had created something special."
