Damien Jurado from this year's Death & Music event. It’s a special event, hosted by DJ John Richards, that really goes beyond a traditional concert experience. It’s a time to reflect on grief, on the people we’ve lost, and heal with our community. Alongside performances from local artists, people shared their own stories, and “an exploration of the intersection of these two distinct veins of life and how they feed into one another.” This year’s sold out event included performances from Damien Jurado, Ian Moore, Sean Nelson, Tomo Nakayama, Star Anna, and Daniel Blue of Motopony.

The song attacks the importance of image in the music industry. In one verse, Malkmus sarcastically recites a fictitious ad looking for a musician to join a band: "advertising looks and chops a must/ no big hair". In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Cut Your Hair" at number 28 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

If you’ve been around the Seattle music scene long enough, you’ve almost surely seen or heard Matt Batey perform. Whether he’s playing in Cataldo or doing harmonies for artists like Rocky Votolato, Batey is always popping up around town. However, over the years Batey began performing his own solo material under the moniker Ruler. His vibrant, catchy pop-rock tracks are gems within themselves and it’s easy to hear why his contemporaries utilize him so much as a collaborator. We caught up with Batey to dig more into the project’s origins and how he writes such great hooks. Check out this KEXP spotlight on local artist Ruler: blog.kexp.org

The song's Middle Eastern-tinged instrumentation was inspired by a vacation that bassist Les Pattinson and guitarist Will Sergeant spent in Russia. Pattinson told Uncut August 2014: "Me and Will had been in Russia for a holiday, and there was this band playing balalaikas in a hotel foyer, really cheesy cabaret. But it was fantastic and we just started messing about and the next thing is we've got a chorus for 'The Killing Moon'. It was just brilliant."

Formerly titled "South African Song," "Rise" was written by John Lydon about the oppression of blacks in South Africa during its hideous apartheid era. He told Smash Hits: "I read this manual on South African interrogation techniques, and 'Rise' is quotes from some of the victims. I put them together because I thought it fitted in aptly with my own feelings about daily existence."

The band brought in Anton Corbijn to do the visuals for the Music For The Masses album, including the photos and the videos. For this song, he put together an 8-minute black-and-white clip for the 12-inch single version, which was cut down to 4:23 for the single version. The video didn't shed any light on the meaning of the song, as we see a series of rather disjointed images, including a pair of shoes that walk themselves.
