This song was inspired by various personal events in Cooke's life, most prominently an event in which he and his entourage were turned away from a whites-only motel in Louisiana even though they had reservations. Cooke was furious and was eventually convinced by his friends to go elsewhere and they drove away honking their car horn. When they arrived at the Castle Motel in downtown Shreveport, the police were waiting for them, arresting them for disturbing the peace.

Pat DiNizio, singer, songwriter and leader of The Smithereens, died on Tuesday at age 62,no cause of death was provided. The Smithereens and DiNizio had a string of hit songs, from "A Girl Like You" and "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" to "Only a Memory" and "Blood and Roses."
