"America" was written and composed by Paul Simon, and tells the story of young lovers hitchhiking their way across the United States, in search of America, in both a literal and figurative sense and was inspired by a 1964 road trip that Simon took with his then girlfriend Kathy Chitty.

"This Land Is Your Land's" lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940, based on an existing melody, a Carter Family tune called "When the World's on Fire", in critical response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." When Guthrie was tired of hearing Kate Smith sing "God Bless America" on the radio in the late 1930s, he sarcastically wrote "God Blessed America for Me" before renaming it "This Land Is Your Land."
The recording of this cover of the song led to the relationship between Ray Davies and Chrissie Hynde, which eventually resulted in the birth of their daughter, Natalie Rae Hynde.
The Kinks recorded "Stop Your Sobbing" on their debut album, 'Kinks', which was rushed out in order to capitalize on the success of "You Really Got Me." Nina’s “Sealine Woman” is a 19th century seaport song about sailors and prostitutes. The sailors would come into port (Charleston or New Orleans perhaps). Nilsson recorded this song in London in 1971 for 'Nilsson Schmilsson'.
